LeftSideCut (3776 KP) rated The Day After Tomorrow (2004) in Movies
Feb 27, 2022
The Day After Tomorrow is probably one of the better big-disaster-blockbusters out there. Roland Emmerich manages to show a sliver of artisctic restraint for once, by which I mean that this one doesn't have a scene where a small dog Crash Bandicoots its way to safety. There's still a fair chunk of unnecessary silliness here and there, the scene with the wolves for example, but for the most part TDAT is well paced and engaging. The big disaster moments are well crafted. Los Angeles getting torn apart by massive tornadoes is suitably horrifying to watch unfold, and the massive flash flooding of Manhattan Island is well built up. They forgo the more cooky elements of other Emmerich projects and are all the better for it.
As per usual, it's hard to give two shits about any of the human characters in these things, but Jake Gyllenhaal at least provides a sniff of acting chops.
The Day After Tomorrow isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it's entertaining enough, and provides the weird catharsis that comes with watching Earth get destroyed to a satisfying degree.

Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated The Dynamics of Disaster in Books
Jan 12, 2018
I had high hopes for [The Dynamics of Disaster] since I love learning about how disasters impact our world. Although [Susan W. Kieffer] obviously knows her content and is passionate about it all the technical reading turned out to be a bit dry. I imagine the author would be a wonderful person to take a class from or work with the human wit does not transfer well to scientific information in text form.
That being said I would love to work with her on her CDC-PE idea.

Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated One Year After (After, #2) in Books
Jan 12, 2018
[One Second After] was one of those books that the cover made me want to buy. I was not disappointed. So when I was in the book store and saw [One Year After] you know I had to buy it even though I have an unusually long queue of books to read. [William R. Forstchen] writes a compelling novel that makes me want to prep for disaster. The way humanity can either come together or tear each other apart is sadly something I feel is true to human nature.

Movie Metropolis (309 KP) rated Final Destination 2 (2003) in Movies
Jun 10, 2019
With a slick filming style and better characters, Final Destination 2 improved on its predecessor in almost every way.
The main disaster, a stunning motorway pile-up, is filmed to an exceptional standard with very little in the way of CGI and this makes way for more inventive deaths that have become talking points for fans of the franchise and converts alike.
Taking a more mythical approach, the violence comes thick and fast and this remains the second best edition of the series.

Movie Metropolis (309 KP) rated Poseidon (2006) in Movies
Jun 10, 2019
Billed as an antidote to those of us who didn’t like the romantic elements of 1997’s box office behemoth, Titanic; Poseidon had the makings of a great disaster film.
Unfortunately, a ballooning budget that ended up reaching $160million and a lacklustre story that featured incredibly wooden characters meant Poseidon sank like a stone upon its release.
It did manage to recoup some of that budget back through home video release, but Warner Bros. still ended up writing the film down as a massive loss.

Micky Barnard (542 KP) rated Sully (2016) in Movies
Jan 20, 2019 (Updated Jan 20, 2019)
Gripping
Sully was more than I expected. It superceded normal disaster movie/plane crash territory and took a narrative built on the personal story of Sully, the Captain of the plane.
This film viewed the crash from various perspectives and as a viewer you build an understanding of what happened and why. The experience of Sully himself and the first officer as their decision making and performance was investigated was rather brutal and made fascinating watching.
Tom Hanks played a believable character, controlled on the outside, doubting on the inside. Great performance.
