My Friend Dahmer (2017)
My Friend Dahmer (2017)
2017 | Biography, Drama, Horror
I watched this film on an wim. It was slightly slow to start but overall, I actually found it interesting.

It does bring up the theory of "is a serial killer born that way? Is something wrong with their brain? Or simply is it due to the way they were brought up and their early life?"

Alex Wolfe is great in the leading role as Dohmer, he plays the role very convincingly.

If you are interested in serial killer documentaries etc, definitely check out this film

"When our memories fly through all the hundreds of moments, scenes, faces, struggles from all the scores of documentaries we’ve seen this year, the one that haunts us the most, the one we each first think of, is the scene in “For Sama” in which a small medical team in a rough hospital under attack in Aleppo, Syria, deliver an unresponsive baby into this harsh, mean world. What happens next on camera, and behind the lens through the poise of director Waad al-Kateab, shook us to our core."

"That movie is spectacular in so many ways. It has everything a documentary should have: unexpected twists, characters that are flawed and complex and crazy. And the story is told in a way that it feels like a compelling — almost fictional — narrative but its obviously as real as it gets. But there are times when you’re watching it and you just go, “Oh my God, did this really happen? Is this real?” I love documentaries and there are a lot of great ones. I’m a big Werner Herzog fan as well, and Errol Morris."

"When I got into documentaries in the mid-eighties, I discovered how you could not just observe but also sculpt reality. This is when I fell in love with the Czech New Wave. So Forman, Passer, Nemec. My favorite film from that era is probably Loves of a Blonde, which looks at the world without an agenda, rhetoric, or plot mechanics, but with lots of empathy and irony. It shows that if you have a good sense of casting and know where to put the camera and when not to cut, the most ordinary things can be lifted into something poetic and timeless."

Netflix is a great application for watching movies, dramas, documentaries etc. The app allows you to have multiple accounts so that friends and family can use their own account to add movies etc to their list to watch and keep a track of what they are watching, without interfering with what you are watching. The app allows you to use Netflix also on multiple devices such as an iPad, Playstation, Laptop etc, which makes for easy viewing on the go. The ap does however require internet connection for viewing. There is a lot of choice, with Netflix series becoming more popular and well-made. The downfall would be that well-loved titles are often removed, for example such as 'Home Alone' being removed at the most popular time (Christmas Holidays), or the Grinch. These movies are often removed at peak times, so that viewers often have to pay for the movies elsewhere. It makes you wonder why you're paying subscription fees, if titles like these are removed just as you want to watch them! Also I've noticed a recent increase in the subscription fees, which is a shame, especially as more and more similar and competing apps are becoming more popular, such as Amazon prime (which offers the very latest, more choice - especially with series).

Since I'm home, sick with the flu, I decided to watch both Fyre Festival documentaries.
This was the one I watched first, and it focused more on the setup of the festival itself. It was kind of amazing to watch the clusterf*** from the inside, and it was kind of humorous. It was interesting, and a complete train wreck. I really hope that d-bag that was in charge of it didn't profit from it at all, because that'd be really messed up.
I do find it hard to sympathize with all of the rich kids and ridiculous 'influencers'. If it seems too good to be true, it is.

The Gypsy Rose and DeeDee Munchhausen by proxy documentaries are numerous, and I found it very interesting that Hulu produced a dramatization of the story. The series started really strong, I devoured the first three episodes one right after another, but then, the waiting game.
This series was probably 3 episodes too long, episodes 6 and 7 felt like straight up filler, and should have been combined. Patricia Arquette was amazing as DeeDee, the thin veneer of kindness over her abusive behavior was really brilliant.

Of course, if you've ever watched a documentary about this, you know how it ends, but it's still an entertaining series (excluding eps 6 and 7).

"A documentary that doesn’t feel like a documentary. It feels like a movie, a movie that I get lost in every time I see it. What’s amazing is if you had scripted it the way it happened people wouldn’t buy it and wouldn’t believe it. But the fact it happened that way in real life, it was mesmerizing and those two boys they were real and you rooted for them and you felt for them and you went through every emotion with them. It was so beautifully done and changed the game in terms of documentaries in making them more commercial and giving them a bigger platform than they had prior."

Entertaining
I love Louis Theroux and his documentaries, and I was excited to see he'd made a podcast that I could listen to while working and out and about, especially as any TV documentaries of his are likely not going to happen for a while!

Overall this is a rather entertaining and informative podcast. The majority of the people featured at least know about (except for KSI and Troy Deeney), but they wouldn't necessarily be my first choices to feature in something like this. However when listening I actually found i was hugely interested in what they had to say and what they'd been through in their lives. Miriam Margolyes especially is an absolutely hoot, I was cracking up listening to her.

Throughout each episode Louis keeps up his usual interview style that always does him well. I have to be honest I think his style doesn't quite work as well as a podcast rather than on TV. He often uses long pauses to prompt his guests to keep talking which on TV is fine as you have a visual to look at whats going on, but on a podcast it's just silence which gets a bit awkward. Louis technically recorded this audio via Zoom so I guess he had video to work with initially but this did frustrate me a little.

Overall though this is a very interesting, entertaining and often funny podcast that's worth listening to if you're a fan of Louis.
