"Cultural Amnesia might just be my favourite book of all time. It’s his essays and reflections on people he has been fascinated by, mainly from the 20th century, and I felt like I’d been properly woken up after reading it. A friend of mine actually walks Clive’s dog, so I wrote him a fan letter and my mate was able to pass it on. It was the first gushing fan letter I had written in a long, long time. I actually sent one to Henry Rollins many many years ago, and he wrote back to me. Fan letters are cool."

"Eastern Sounds is historically a very important record for me because it contained a riff, which I stole for what was to be my first hit single, ‘I Love My Dog’! I just couldn’t get that melody out of my mind! Eventually I wrote my song based on this record and thought nobody would find out. Later I owned up to it and paid Yusef his royalties for that song. Interestingly he also took his name from the Prophet Joseph/Yousef. We both embraced Islam, but he converted much earlier than I had, I didn’t think about religion at the time."

Saw this years ago in the Ludlow summer festival, they had the staging set up in the castle, which was a fab setting. Scene with the night's watch was brilliant - they had a dog on a rope lead which, whilst the actor was saying his part was walking around and around him tying him up, actors on stage were trying their hardest not to laugh, but the audience were in hysterics so eventually none of them could stay straight-faced. Actor got himself disentangled, they carried on as if nothing had happened, excellent production.

I was really surprised this came out in the 60s. I would have assumed it came out just before punk broke properly in the late 70s. Considering some of the music coming out of America at that same time, for this to come out with its passion and anger is frankly astounding. I Wanna Be Your Dog is a rock and roll classic, as is No Fun. It beggars belief how long it took British bands to cotton on to this new style of music.
