DRAGONRIDER is the first book in this trilogy, with each book from the perspective of one of the men. This time, it was Kirby. He is a mage, down on his luck, lost in the Welsh countryside when we first meet him. He's young and doesn't quite understand why he's doing this but needs the money. I loved the comment about the number of Welsh castles! Anyway, when he arrives, he finds out that he's just filling in numbers for a dragon to choose from. Obviously, even in a world where mages exist, dragons are still a thing of myth. To everyone's surprise, including Kirby's, he's the one the dragon chooses... so let the fun begin!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Knowing it was from Kirby's perspective helped me power through when I really REALLY wanted more from Cai and Harlen. I honestly can't wait for their books. Kirby is dealt a few surprises in here, especially considering he knows zip about dragons or their riders. I do wish Cai and Harlen had integrated him a bit more but I'm hoping the reason for this will be told in later books.

There is one character I absolutely loathe - as intended. In fact, I disliked him before I met him but once he was there in person, that dislike intensified. I really hope he has his comeuppance in future books!

Anyway, there is a bit of a twist near the end that broke my heart. I know it's only the first book but it can't stop there! And when is book 2 available because I don't know if my heart will cope with a long wait!!!

A brilliant story that I thoroughly enjoyed and definitely recommend to all dragon lovers out there.

I am a huge fan of Cressida Cowell. She's on my Author Watch list! I think she's brilliant. This is the fifth book in the How To Train Your Dragon series, and it was just as clever and hilarious as the other ones. The writing is an interesting combination of poetic and satirical, with just a twinge of sarcasm. The characters are so full of life that I feel like they're my friends. The funny parts are hilarious, and the dramatic parts literally sent shivers down my spine. Only Cressida Cowell can make a fart joke and then make you want to cry two seconds later. Also. The audiobooks are narrated by David Tennant. So there's that. If you haven't listened or read them yet, do so immediately. I guarantee you'll want to be a viking within the first chapter. Cross is a young adult contemporary fantasy that not only deals with our main character having vEDS, but also we find out about magic, and barriers, and witches, and dragons. Trust me, there is never a dull moment. Ray is an excellent character, being charming but not cocky. He reacts to his parents' news in a completely understandable way without overreacting. He also sees people as they are, and doesn't prejudge them at all. With an action-packed story, this fantasy is one to enjoy.

With a solid story-line, great world-building, and excellent characters, this story was a delight to read. There were no editing or grammatical errors that disrupted my reading flow, making this a very smooth read. Absolutely recommended by me.

Fitting conclusion
The conclusion to the trilogy sees the dragon population under threat from poachers, and their use of a female "light fury" to lure toothless and all the dragons who follow him to their capture.
The plot sees Hiccup struggling to accept his inevitable marriage to Astrid, at the same time as Toothless seems besotted with his new female acquaintance. Toothless's reluctance to leave Hiccup behind is won over by his desire to get to know the female; whereas with Hiccup his head wins out and he doesn't seem ready to focus on anything other than leading the clan.
The visuals are excellent, with some scenes that rival Coco for beautiful other-worldly colours.
The story is enough to keep all entertained, and this might have been my 4 year old son's first real emotional film (at the end he turned to me with wet eyes and said "its ok sometimes to cry when a happy thing happens instead of a sad one").
