"This album was mixed by Kevin Shirley and I think he did an awesome job because you can hear John Bonham doing more than he did on recordings. I think that’s probably because of the way the songs were written, because after being on the road they’d developed the songs a bit and a lot of the things you listen out for, like the subtleties on the record, they exaggerate them and that goes from the drums right up to the singing. This is just one of those recordings where you can hear them exaggerating the things that people love about these songs and how they grew on the night into some kind of monster and the material went with it."

"I'm so excited about being on the same bill as Patti Smith at Field Day! I think it's going to be fucking brilliant as well. I think she's going to be amazing. You can sometimes be disappointed because of all the baggage and preconceptions that an artist can bring from back in the day but I think she'll be a killer. She's going to be all over it and I'm really excited. But yeah, this album was a massive mainstay in our tour bus and throughout our working life and it still is now. I always wanted our band to sound like Patti Smith Group - they've got the piano, they've got the hard and fast edgy guitar, the bass… that's how I wanted Supergrass to sound like. How close did we come to achieving that? Well, there were the odd songs where we had that energy where Danny [Goffey] was on drums and keeping quite simple 4/4 beats and punky beats but without having screaming and distorted guitars all over the place. We had those moments of guitar, bass, piano and drums and we had that energy. I mean, can you imagine Sex Pistols with a piano? And that's what Patti Smith Group did so brilliantly - they had that raw energy. They had that piano but it wasn't used in that flowery way. It's a bit like how Bowie used piano in that rhythmic way. This record is an utter classic. That moment in 'Horses' where it all kicks off, I think we've searched to write our own version of that over the years. It's like, 'Woah! Take me away!'"

"I love this album. We used to play these tunes in The Idle Race; about two or three songs off that album. For about a year we did them and they were so good to play. That big, rough r'n'b sound. I’ve actually recorded ‘Mercy, Mercy’ on my new album, Longwave. It’s a version like we used to do it – just two guitars, drums and bass and background shouting. It sounds like the old record, really. I think that sound was important back then. There was a lot of r'n'b going on. Obviously, you had The Spencer Davis Group with Steve Winwood, who I love – he’s a brilliant guy. He’s one guy I’d like to work with one day. I haven’t seen him for a few years but we used to hang out a bit."

"You could be generic and call it krautrock but I think it’s much more than that. I really think it’s the most modern of that era, you can hear it on so many records, especially on The Good, The Bad & The Queen, those kind of filtered drums that just shuffle. You can hear it everywhere. The track ‘Hollywood’ - we were touring America and I had it on repeat. That, ‘Caramel’, ‘Marzipan’... Damon [Albarn] must have nicked ‘Caramel’ for a title for a Blur song, on 13. I love the cover as well. Artwork has always been really important. I think every band will admit that there’s at least three Neu! tracks they love or three Can tracks, but it’s hard to love a whole album. I genuinely love Zuckerzeit."
