I love this series, I think the world that has been created is brilliant. I thoroughly enjoy the every growing stories and magical elements. I really feel immersed with this story.
The reason for the low rating is I think the could have been 200 odd pages shorter, I found the first 300 pages quite dull. I really dislike the language used as the voice of Rowan - so cliche, get me a bucket! When there were large sections of this story I did struggle to go, very glad that Manon was introduced. I'm also perhaps a little harsh as I was a Celaena an Chaol fan.
I will definitely be reading the next book after that ending and all the possibilities.

CHILLFILTR (46 KP) rated Upside Down by Matt Shill in Music
Jul 11, 2019
He says his foundation is all rock and soul but we also hear some deep folk roots. Matt Shill is a singer-songwriter from New York, currently based in Miami, Florida. He has a great falsetto, and something about this groove gets me giddy; the 6/8 is so fast you sort of miss it until you are forced to wonder where the snare hits are coming from. It's like an audio version of Where's Waldo, and it's just fun.
This song is a journey through somewhere we've never been. It feels Raphael Saadiq at the same time it feels like Damien Rice; this is modern music at it's best: true synthesis between roots of folk, soul, and rock with a strong voice, good polish, and some elements of surprise.

Awix (3310 KP) rated The Private Life of Elder Things in Books
Aug 18, 2019 (Updated Aug 18, 2019)
Short story collection consisting of various riffs on elements from HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos; you probably have to be fairly familiar with Lovecraft and his acolytes to get the full effect, as this does almost turn into a game of Spot-the-Yithian in places. All the usual suspects appear, along with excursions into more obscure areas (there's some excellent Hastur-related wordplay in the story featuring that part of the mythos).
Of the three authors, Tchaikovsky is probably the best stylist, McDonald manages to find some humanity and depth in fairly unlikely places, while Gauntlett is the pulpiest. None of them attempt to actually copy Lovecraft's idiosyncratic prose style, which is probably a blessing. None of the stories are genuinely inspired, but they're usually very readable even if they sometimes get a touch bizarre.

Way too long (2 more)
Painfully slow
A bit pointless
Disappointing
There will always be a lot of hype for a new Tarantino film. After seeing a trailer for a peek of Hollywood in '69 this looked interesting. It has a large ensemble talented cast playing many of the stars of the era.
Unfortunately there doesn't appear much point to this film until the last 15 minutes. Up to then it's very slow and overly long at nearly 2 hours 40 minutes long. It jumps from scenes of characters to others with little connecting them. I thought this was going to be a fairly accurate account of events that took place at the time... But it's far from that. It has its good elements but overall it was a bit of a dissapointment.
