Apocalypse Now (1979)
Apocalypse Now (1979)
1979 | Action, Drama, War

"I think my second favorite film is Apocalypse Now, partly because I’m 58 years old, and I grew up with Vietnam on the television. That movie is just such an amazing journey, and it was really terrifying to watch. There were just so many elements of that film that just left a big impression on me when I saw it. I think I saw it — when did it come out? In ’78, ’79? It was just an amazing film. For me, not having served, it kind of articulated and revealed the fear I think I would’ve had, had I had to go. There were just so many elements about that film that were terrifying. It was fascinating filmmaking, and I love that film. In my career, I finally got to work with Bobby Duvall, he played my father in the movie I did with Billy Bob Thornton [Jayne Mansfield’s Car], but to talk to Bobby about those sequences and what that was like, and how it was like to shoot… It’s a pretty profound movie."

Scarlet Nexus
Scarlet Nexus
2020 | Action
The game starts with an interesting premise in the distant future and everyone has brain powers and advanced technology. People have abilities like electrokinesis the ability to control electricity. They can also send messages directly to each other's brains. The story has really cool sci-fi elements in it and you can play as either Kasane or Yuito, the two main protagonists. I went with Kasane and got to see how her story played out. You can do a new game plus playthrough with the other character and you get to see loose ends tied up from their perspective. Combat is fun and the story and characters are great. There's a lot of wild twists and reveals that add to the elements of the storytelling. There are references to global warming and time travel. Scarlet Nexus is really good overall and because it's done so well, it kept me playing until the end. Elemental (Elemental, #1)

The first book in the Elemental trilogy is set in a futuristic United States colony where people called Guardians have powers over the elements: water, wind, earth, and fire. For years, sixteen-year-old Thomas believed that he doesn't have powers like everyone else in the colony, until pirates kidnap the Guardians and the remaining colonists fight for a survival on an abandoned town.

Elemental has its good elements that worked out well in favor, but it had some elements that just didn't work out too well – it just had more elements that didn't work out really well.

The book is primarily a survival book, but there's a mysterious aura surrounding the book that kept it somewhat interesting. However, the mysterious aspect? Antony John overdid it. You're immediately thrown into action when the book starts and it doesn't actually stop. A huge chunk of the beginning is dedicated to surviving from the pirates who kidnapped the guardians and Thomas and his friends trying to survive on this mysterious Skeleton Town.

There's not much about this Plague the Guardians keep talking about or how their elements work – what, precisely, is an echo? It's obviously a side effect, and it seems to leave a negative remnant on the person, but what is it exactly?. I'm confused on how this Plague works or how it started, even with that newspaper-esque clip – it sounds like an experiment gone absolutely awry and blew up not only in the experimenters' faces, but the entire world. No one appreciates an experiment gone awry inside and outside the lab, but the dead can't complain.

There's this "solution" the pirates are looking for, but Antony jumps between Griffin and Thomas intermittently – I'm still not too sure who the "solution" is. I'm not sure about this whole Guardians thing – sounds like an experiment similar to the one done to Captain America in a different style – even with Thomas and his companions coming across things in Skeleton Town that make them question the origins of the Guardians.

Elemental is also heading into highly awkward love triangle – it's in absolute danger zone and I'm not sure I want to stick around for two girls pining for Thomas' attention. It's not noticeable yet – it's very subtle and certainly doesn't disturb anything going on in the story or the overall plot.

By the end, Antony John leaves you with curiosity and perhaps a need to continue the series, but he leaves more questions and confusion with loose ends than a solid answer or two.

It Follows (2015)
It Follows (2015)
2015 | Horror
A teen flick wrapped up in a John Carpenter film
There are many elements of 1970's and 80's horror films in this modern movie. From the panning cinematography and quietness of The Shining, to the virgin aspect of Halloween and Friday 13th. In this case, they've used the idea of sex to transmit a curse hence the plot is rather thin. And while the dream like quality is always eerie, the story wasn't strong enough to warrant a good rating.

fantastic read
A quick amazing read by this author. This book is exhilarating, steamy, action packed with some paranormal elements thrown in. The characters were really well written with amazing hot chemistry between them. The story flows perfectly with a few twists and turns. This maybe a quick read but its definitely worth the time. I can't wait to read more from this author in the future.

Highly recommended read

Excellent
I see what the hype is all about!! When I saw a few trailers this looked liked an odd teen-comedy to me?! After finally watching it, I can say it blends elements of Watchmen, Kill Bill, and Superbad. Quite violent and bloody for a film with a strong dose of comedy. It has some great action scenes, a very cool car and a fine soundtrack too! This film does what it says on the cover, it Kicks-Ass!!

I picked this book up for something like £2 in The Works (kinda like Bargain Books), and now I know why.

Set during the Wars of Marlborough, I was hoping for an exciting and interesting story during which I might learn something new. Unfortunately, the novel was pretty bland: both in plot and execution. The prose was never really that gripping; none of the characters were that interesting and elements of the plot were just, well, silly.

In short: meh.
