Ross (3284 KP) rated Sword of the North in Books
Sep 29, 2017
The story picks up where The Grim Company left off. Where the first book really focused on the main group's journey with some side chapters in the north, this now splits into each of those main characters' solo journeys. We move between Brodar Kayne (and The Wolf), Sasha, Eremul the half-mage, Cole, Yllandris and the thoroughly detestable (but brilliant) Sir Meredith. All of their stories tell of different events, and few of the them cross over, meaning this book really is rather epic.
A number of threads from the first book are either progressed, explained further or closed off, and a number of new mysteries, invading forces and battles are introduced.
For the second book of a trilogy you would expect little extra additions, progressing those introduced in the first book and seguing into the final instalment. Not so here, as a number of new, critical elements are introduced, some very late in the book, which are leading to a fairly epic third book to close off.
Absolutely awesome.

Merissa (12066 KP) rated A Wizard's Forge (The Woern Saga, #1) in Books

Some books are called epic simply for the sheer volume that they have. This book is epic... with volume as an added extra. This story is staggering in its magnitude. It incorporates Sci-Fi with Fantasy but also includes a lot of action. The characters are all well-developed and I really felt for Vic as she tried to work through what had happened to her. Vic is full of flaws but that just makes her more real.
As you can see from the title, this is Book 1. The story is wrapped up pretty well at the end of this book and will leave you wanting to read more.
The only thing I will say is that I skipped over the majority of the place names as they simply became too long and tongue-twisterish - Olmlablaire being one of the easiest ones. They are either very easy like Re and Latha or more complicated.
Definitely recommended for all Fantasy fans, especially those who like a bigger book to really get their teeth into. And at this price, you'll be getting a lot of book for your bucks!
This review is for the revised edition of Blade of Amber, now called A Wizard's Forge.
* I received this book from the author in return for a fair and honest review. *

'Troy. The most marvellous kingdom in all the world. The Jewel of the Aegean. Glittering Ilion, the city that rose and fell not once but twice . . .'
When Helen, the beautiful Greek queen, is kidnapped by the Trojan prince Paris, the most legendary war of all time begins.
Watch in awe as a thousand ships are launched against the great city of Troy.
Feel the fury of the battleground as the Trojans stand resolutely against Greek might for an entire decade.
And witness the epic climax - the wooden horse, delivered to the city of Troy in a masterclass of deception by the Greeks . . .
In Stephen Fry's exceptional retelling of our greatest story, TROY will transport you to the depths of ancient Greece and beyond.
________
I love Greek Mythology and Stephen Fry is one of my favourite people. All through this book his voice was in my head. Brilliant retellings and underlying humour. Brilliant!

Dean (6926 KP) rated True Grit (2010) in Movies
Feb 16, 2018
Good Western
A very good and enjoyable film, nevertheless it didn't quite hit the heights I thought it would after all the hype. I haven't seen the '69 John Wayne version but imagine this is a lot "grittier". It's a good story, the acting especially from Bridges as the old scruffy US Marshall and the young girl is superb to watch with a witty script to boot. It just felt a little short and lacking a bit more action to be the epic master piece it has been heralded as. A very good film indeed but not up there in the westerns dept with Unforgiven, The Outlaw Josey Wales.

I listened to audio of this - and it was spectacular. I don't think I would have rated this book as high had I not listened to the audio of it.
The story was a bit old ......stuff I've read before - a bit boring - but alas, it's a bit middle grade and I'm used to more fast paced exciting blood and guts - but it was still fun to listen to - epic-ly fun to listen to - my first book with full cast and boy was it worth it! I will look for more books like that because wow..........just, listen to the audio you wont be disappointed!

BookwormMama14 (18 KP) rated Goliath (Leviathan, #3) in Books
Jan 2, 2019
Goliath brought an epic conclusion to the Leviathan Trilogy. I read through this book quicker than the others (and that is saying a lot). As the crew of the Leviathan continue their mission, the action and adventure increases! Tensions rise as secrets long kept come into the light. Alek wants to do the right thing, but is his judgement clouded? If you are looking for something new to read, this trilogy is where it is at! Watching Alek and Deryn learn, grow and mature along this journey was a delight. This is a great story and one that I look forward to revisiting in the future.
