"Poetic and oh-so-funky, Orson Welles’s filmic essay on deception has balls of experimental steel. Cobbled together in his later years of European exile, it’s both a cheeky thesis on the nature of fakery and the best example I can imagine of filmmaking as giddy, childlike play. Now if someone would only do a decent DVD of The Trial, we’d be in business. (Nudge, nudge.)"

"I read “Self-Reliance” when I was 17 as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley in the ‘50s. In this short essay, Emerson takes a stance against conformity and insists on trusting your own judgement, on finding your own path, on living in the present and augmenting what is unique to your own character. These are the principles that have shaped my life and work."

A book of why I write by people who write
A book of short essays from poets writing about the art of poetry. Look out for Kathleen Jamie's essay on truth, very insightful. Some of the book was like a massive tongue twister whilst others where thought provoking. Worth a read if you want an insiders view.

"Another obvious choice, but I have so much love for DFW. I have always been more drawn to his non-fiction, and this collection of essays is my favorite. The first writing of his that I ever read was the title essay of this collection, and it made me want to be a better journalist. It think DFW is a writer that generally inspires other writers to want to be better."

" I always want to shout out props to hard hitting essay films. This was nuts! I felt sick during and after, but I was full of admiration for the sheer strength and determination it took to make this film and the thinking that forged these themes into a cogent survey of something extreme and disturbing in human nature and the times in which we live. Not for the over-sensitive."
