**BOOK SYNOPSIS**
Felicity Koerber has had a rough year. She's moving back to Galveston Island and opening a bean to bar chocolate factory, fulfilling a dream she and her late husband, Kevin, had shared. Craft chocolate means a chance to travel the world, meeting with farmers and bringing back beans she can turn into little blocks of happiness, right close to home and family. She thinks trouble has walked into her carefully re-built world when puddle-jump pilot Logan Hanlon shows up at her grand opening to order custom chocolates. Then one of her employees drops dead at the party, and Felicity's one-who-got-away ex-boyfriend - who's now a cop - thinks Felicity is a suspect.

As the murder victim's life becomes more and more of a mystery, Felicity realizes that if she's going to clear her name in time to save her business, she might need Logan's help. Though she's not sure if she's ready to let anyone into her life - even if it is to protect her from being the killer's next victim. For Felicity, Galveston is all about history, and a love-hate relationship with the ocean, which keeps threatening to deliver another hurricane - right into the middle of her investigation. The protagonist in this book is Elena, and the book is told from her perspective. Elena is a teacher at a high-level school, she is married to a man, who holds a very high position when it comes to education. She has two daughters, eldest is a little miss perfect, she is smart and her daddy loves her, the younger one was struggling all her life. Elena hates her husband, and she is ready to do anything when her little girl is sent away to the lowest grade school. I really liked all the characters chosen for this book, they all are intriguing, different and they have unique stories to tell. I really loved to see different generations displayed in this book, their stories entwined beautifully.

I loved the narrative of this book. The whole concept of this novel intrigued me. I liked the topics discussed in this novel, such as partner and family relationship issues, WWII, perfectionism, political propaganda and brainwashing, children abuse, people segregation and many more. I really enjoyed the research done for this novel, I like history, and I loved real historical stories incorporated in this novel. I think this novel is quite fast-paced, and the pages just flew by for me, I was really engrossed in this story.

I really enjoy C. Dalcher’s writing style, she creatively uses political situations, to create these amazing dystopian countries and rules, that leaves me gobsmacked every time. The chapters are really short, and it is an absolute pleasure to read this novel. The ending of this book left me a little confused, I liked the way the author decided to conclude this novel, but it didn’t leave me fully satisfied with the outcome.

A really well written police procedural

A Shadowed Livery is a police procedural very much in the vein of an Agatha Christie novel. It’s set in 1938, just as the rumblings of war begin and National Socialism and Fascism raise their heads in Germany. DI James Givens has been pulled off the case that he was working on (the murder of a Jewish butcher - the guilty men have been hanged, but there’s still work to be done) and sent to a small village in the English countryside, to wrap up the deaths of three people (mother, son and fiancée) at Grovestock House, where Sir Arthur Barleigh and his family live. DI Given has been told that it’s a simple case of murder/ suicide, but of course it develops into anything but that.

I very much enjoyed this - the style in which it was written felt just right for the time period, and there was great attention to detail. I liked how Given’s background is revealed as the story progresses, and how relevant it was to the time in history.

The mystery itself had me guessing up to the end, and it has a great ending! I love it when I’m kept guessing to the final pages. DI Given is a very likeable character, if a little naive in some ways - but that’s rather nice really. It lends him that human touch.

I’ll be interested to see what happens in the second book as we edge closer to war. I’d like to see how DI Given gets on!
