David McK (3562 KP) rated Lords and Ladies (Discworld, #14; Witches #4) in Books
Oct 30, 2022
As a character, Granny Weatherwax first appeared in the third Discworld novel Equal Rites, which was about, well, Equal Rights for both sexes. She then re-appeared (and beacem the unofficial head of her coven) in both Wyrd Sisters (where the broad outline of the plot bears a striking resemblance to certain Scottish play) and Witches Abroad (fairytales as you've never heard them before!). This is thus the fourth Discworld novel to include her as a main character, this time taking its inspiration from another Shakespeare play: A Midsummers night dream.
In this, and unlike the Elves of most comtemporary literature (Elves = good), the Elvish race are a foe to be reckoned with! This quote from about half-way through sums it up:
'Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder.
Elves are marvellous. They cause marvels.
Elves are fantastic. They creat fantasies.
Elves are glamorous. They project glamour.
Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment.
Elves are terrific. They beget terror.
The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake ...
No-one ever said Elves are nice.
Elves are bad.'

Bethr1986 (305 KP) rated Constitution Check (Dungeons and Dating #4) by Katherine McIntyre in Books
Sep 24, 2022
Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!
This is book number 4 in the Dungeons and Dating series and I have to say I have loved every one so far. The series is centred on a group of people who run a business called the Tabletop Tavern and have come together through their love of board games, particularly Dungeons and Dragons.
Each book focuses on different characters and their love life and life in general. This book focuses on Kelly who is trying to get over a domestically violent relationship that ended with the death of her then-girlfriend and Tabby who has never felt any good for anybody.
Katherine is an absolute wizard with words and you get a clear understanding of what each character is going through. She tackles the tougher subjects abuse/homophobia/grief etc in such a delicate but powerful way. It is a pleasure to read even though some of it is heart-breaking.
I 100% recommend reading not just this book but the whole series. Fantastic Katherine.

LeftSideCut (3776 KP) rated Moon Knight in TV
May 5, 2022
It's bloody wonderful that we're at a point where more obscure Marvel characters such as Moon Knight are getting their own projects.
This latest limited series does a fantastic job of introducing him, and his multiple personalities, in a unique and interesting way. It's definitely something different for the MCU and it's good that Disney+ is providing a platform to explore these quirkier and darker avenues.
Oscar Isaac deserves a whole bunch of credit for his portrayal of essentially two different characters. Both Stephen Grant and Mark Spector are characters that I cared about by the time the finale rolled around.
The overall pacing is the main detriment to Moon Knight. After an intriguing start, it does hit a major lull around the midway point that flirts with boredom on occasion, but a sharp left turn plotwise and a thoroughly entertaining finale save proceedings and then some.
Another enjoyable, if not perfect, series from Marvel Studios then, and a promising set up for Moon Knight to enter the movies as they start to explore some of the darker corners of their properties.

David McK (3562 KP) rated Guards! Guards! Discworld Novel 8 in Books
Jul 15, 2023
When people ask which Discworld book to start with, I often tell them to skip the first two in the series (The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic), then ask in which direction their interests lie.
Reimagining of famous plays/fairytales? Try any in The Witches series.
Primarily murder whodunnits? The Guards.
Of which this is the first.
So this is the one to introduce the reader to Sam Vimes, Nobby Nobbs, Fred Colon and Carrot Ironfoundersson, as well as featuring a prominent role for The Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, and which would lead to perhaps the most-revisited characters in the entire Discworld series - I think Pratchett returned to the Watch a further 7 times, for a total of 8 such novels.
Quick google search: yes, 8 times. Only matched by the Wizards of Unseen University.
Anyway, this is the one that sees a secret society summoning a Dragon in the hopes of installing a puppet ruler to the vacant throne of Ankh-Morpork, before things go awry ...

Merissa (13000 KP) rated Peace (The Four Horsemen, #5) in Books
Dec 17, 2018 (Updated May 20, 2023)
I am so glad that T.A. Chase decided to give Lam his own book. This angel is one who has played a significant hand in sorting out the Four Horsemen, and he became more interesting every time I read about him.
This book is full of revelations, action, kidnappings and love. I loved how the Four (previous) Horsemen play their parts, and Day is a fantastic character. He has his faults and is aware of them, and Lam loves him in spite of them. What angel - or fallen angel - could ask for more?
This is very well written, with no editing or grammatical errors that I found. I felt this was the perfect conclusion to this set of stories, although I could see it continuing with the shenanigans going on with the Quad. Definitely recommended.
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *

Merissa (13000 KP) rated Reborn (Hollow City Coven #6) in Books
May 23, 2023
Gillian and Shayne have made it out of Tenebris, only to find Mathias under attack. Apparently, he has been for the whole amount of time that they were in Tenebris. Help arrives in the form of a coven master and a friend. Things are not as they seem to be though, and Gillian, Shayne, and Mathias are drawn deeper into intrigue that they have no control over. They need to do something but are unsure of what.
This is an explosive and twisted ending to this series, which has been full of turns the whole way through. There is so much more to this than just hot sex, although, trust me, that is more than good too. 😉
The perfect ending to a fantastic series, each novella is the perfect length for a quick and steamy read, full of enjoyment and adventure. Definitely recommended by me.

Merissa (13000 KP) rated Forever Mine in Books
May 30, 2023
This is a free short story that I received after signing up for the author's newsletter. As far as I know, it isn't available anywhere else.
It is fast-paced and full of action, and yet you are also able to receive hundreds of years of history and tradition without an info dump. There is a more recent history between Asher and Roya. They were together but Roya wanted her career to take off more before she settled down with Asher. However, when circumstances change, it is Asher that she turns to.
With fantastic characters that leave you wanting more, this is a short story that could quite easily be the forerunner to a series. Well written, with no editing or grammatical errors that I found, this was a short but hot coffee break book. Definitely recommended.

Merissa (13000 KP) rated Rise of the Fallen (All the King's Men, #1) in Books
Jun 2, 2023
Man, these vamps are HOT! Micah is an all-male Alpha who has recently been devastated by his mate leaving him. To mate with a vampire doesn't always require it to be both-sided! Micah can't deal with his pain any longer and wants to end it all. He makes arrangements with his enemies for them to do it and to let him be at peace. Along comes Sam. Not only does she stop them from killing him but she gives him a reason to live.
There are so many fantastic characters in this book I don't know where to start. I love Micah and Sam. I'm glad to see Micah come out the other side. But I want to know more about Tristan and Josie, Sev and Ari and I definitely NEED to know more about Trace.
If you want a hot paranormal romance with a rocking crew, then look no further! Get it whilst it's free!!
