LeftSideCut (3778 KP) rated Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020) in Movies
Aug 24, 2020
The yearly Eurovision Song Contest is the epitome of car crash television. Any lack of merit is made up for by the sheer cheesiness of it all, and it's ultimately not very good, but it's hard to look away.
Fire Saga takes this concept, and just adds Will Ferrell to the mix - arguably perfect casting for a film based on this subject.
Both Ferrell and Rachel McAdams are great, and are willing to poke fun at themselves. Legion's Dan Stevens is fantastic as well.
Some of the songs written for this are just ridiculous. They would fit in seamlessly alongside any real world Eurovision stuff - well written nonsense I guess would be an apt description.
On the surface, Fire Saga may appear silly, it actually possesses a huge amount of heart. Although some (like me) find Eurovision pretty dumb, it clearly means a lot to many people. This is shown off in spades here, and boasts some genuinely emotional plot points. The narrative isn't too dissimilar to Blades of Glory on terms of structure if that helps to picture it.
All in all, The Story of Fire Saga is hugely entertaining, pretty funny, and is brimming with charm. You would have to have a heart of stone to not get something out of it.
Sarah (7798 KP) rated The Shining (1980) in Movies
Jun 7, 2020
From a psychological horror point of view, this is fantastic and is exactly what you'd expect from a Stanley Kubrick film. The score and the cinematography are brilliant. This entire film fills you with such a sense of unease and nervousness, without relying on predictable jump scares like modern horrors. Jack Nicholson has always been one of my favourite actors and he puts in a great performance here as the tormented Jack Torrance. Stephen King really dislikes this film and I can see why considering how much it differs from the book. For me yes there are differences but the majority arent a major problem and I can still appreciate the film itself.
The biggest issue I have with this film is Shelley Duvall. I really cannot stand her acting and her portrayal of Wendy is so laughable and over the top. I really don't like it whenever she's on screen and considering how central she is to the story, this is a major disappointment. If the character of Wendy had been better acted, I wouldve scored this film much higher - she really impacted on my enjoyment of what should be a hugely tense and suspenseful film.
Overall a classic, but definitely not perfect.
Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2206 KP) rated Murder on Lexington Avenue in Books

Frank gets involved in this case pretty quickly, although Sarah’s involvement takes a little longer to develop. Still, the duo once again make a fantastic team as they work together well to solve the case. Along the way, we get plenty of suspects and twists. I was sure I had it figured out several times before we reached the end. We do get some updates on Frank and Sarah’s families, including something that I think will jump start a new longer mystery arc. I also appreciated how this book explored the deaf community in the 1890’s. You really could jump in here, but whether you start this series here or go back to the beginning, you’ll be pulled back in time with these excellent books.
