Merissa (12934 KP) rated Footsteps of the Past (Second Chances #2) in Books
Jul 15, 2021 (Updated Jul 17, 2023)
FOOTSTEPS OF THE PAST is the second book in the Second Chances series and this time, it is Chess and André's story. They have been together for nine years but there are still secrets hidden away, just waiting to be found.
Oh, what a story. Poor Chess. I can completely understand where he was coming from. He's worked so hard to turn his life around, but sometimes the doubt resurfaces that maybe, just maybe, he doesn't deserve all the good things. As for André, he loves Chess completely but is swayed by his mum to be away from him more often than not. I loved it when he took a stand and said 'enough!'
The group of friends play a big part, as you would imagine. Elliot and Win are still my favourites, with Chess and André close behind. As I suspected would happen, Ms Stevens is changing my mind about Spencer, and Wolf has learnt his lesson.
A fantastic addition to the series, this book focuses on truth and honesty, sharing the highs and the lows. I loved every word and have no hesitation in recommending it.

Merissa (12934 KP) rated Omegas in Power (Omegas in Power #1) in Books
Jun 1, 2021 (Updated Jul 18, 2023)
OMEGAS IN POWER is the first book in the series of the same name, and we meet Grayson and Zack, an omega and alpha who don't look as they should, who don't act as they should, and have a whole host of problems down to something out of their control.
I loved how these two were, right from the start. Originally, I thought Grayson was going to be some hard-nosed businessman who was softened by Zack, but I quickly realised there was so much more to him than that. Finding out who they both were made this book exceptional. Yes, there is instant attraction, and yes, there is the instant proposal (which does make sense when you read it), but still, these two figure out just who they are and what they're doing. Add Lucian into the mix, and it's just the perfect mix for me.
With a great storyline, perfect pacing, a fantastic pair of main characters plus amazing supporting characters, this book really did tick all of my boxes. I thoroughly enjoyed every word and I can't wait to see what happens next. Absolutely recommended by me.

Merissa (12934 KP) rated King of Beasts (Curse of the Dark Kingdom #4) in Books
Jul 20, 2023
KING OF BEASTS is the last (so far) in the Curse of the Dark Kingdom series. Everyone has broken free of their curse apart from the eldest, Kyllean. He is the one stuck in The Library, in a beast form. Anyone want to guess the fairytale?
Kyllean and Leandra definitely get their story told, but the others appear too so, in the end, the Big Bad is defeated by all of them working together. I do love it when that happens, don't you?! Leandra is a strong character; she has to be as she carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. She is not cowed by Kyllean, even when he roars, and I loved how she always stood up to him. Kyllean himself is a very sympathetic character. He is doing the best he can, the only way he knows how. His insecurities lead him to questionable actions but I found I understood them.
A fantastic retelling of a classic, this was a wonderful ending to the series. The world- and character-building are just as good as always, and the pacing was perfect. Definitely recommended by me.

Merissa (12934 KP) rated Beyond the Black Mist (The Familiar Curse #2) in Books
Mar 19, 2021 (Updated Aug 2, 2023)
BEYOND THE BLACK MIST is the second book in The Familiar's Curse series, and we continue with Dante and Juliet's story. Both of them are separated, and in places where they don't want to be. With all the fear and mistrust, how will they ever be together?
You really do need to read book one as this is a series, not a bunch of standalones. We are introduced to new characters, and well as being reunited with old ones. And, I'm afraid to say, Nicholas doesn't get any nicer in this one! Pops, though. Aww, I want one of my own.
Anyway, moving on. For most of the book, Juliet and Dante are working towards being together, and when they do, it's lovely, but not over the top. There is a twist at the end that you may have seen coming. It certainly crossed my mind but then I thought 'no'. LOL Guess I was wrong!
A brilliant continuation of the story, with some major changes in one particular character. I know who I want to end up with her, but I will wait to see. I love being surprised.
Absolutely fantastic, a great addition to the series, and definitely recommended by me.

Merissa (12934 KP) rated Endeavor (Voyagers #4) in Books
Aug 14, 2023
ENDEAVOR is the fourth book in the Voyagers series and I'm really hoping isn't the end! After all, as was pointed out, Charlie hasn't found love yet. Please tell me there is more to come!
Anyway, back to this one...
Jared, Alex, and Aiden are all characters we have met in the previous books. Alex is Jarad's bodyguard, and Aiden is his lawyer. The sparks have been there for all to see but they haven't acted on for numerous reasons. But then they stay on Now, Voyager and the love spell works once again.
This was a hard read in places, dealing with stalkers, sexual assault, depression and PTSD, to name just a couple of topics. However, they are perfectly written, with no quick fixes, just understanding and compassion.
It was also hot as hell, and not just because they're in Thailand for part of it! They may have a multitude of reasons, but once they decide to go for it, phew! Hold onto your hats! Hot and steamy and so full of feelings.
Once I started this, I couldn't put it down. Absolutely fantastic and HIGHLY recommended by me.
Just... please tell me there's another book. Please?!

Merissa (12934 KP) rated Magic, Demons and the Hunter (Enchanted Ink #2) in Books
Aug 25, 2023
MAGIC, DEMONS AND THE HUNTER is part of the Enchanted Ink multi-author series and features Eliphas and Pierre, who we met in A SCENT LIKE NO OTHER, in the FATED MATES ANTHOLOGY.
This time, Mondo is also around. He is the third part of their triad, and the one Pierre and Eli thought was dead. He is very much alive but missing a chunk of memories, including those that would have sent him to Pierre and Eli.
While I love the coven and the triad in particular, I would have preferred to know more about their world and the demons they face. As it is part of a series, I did feel as though I'd missed out on some world-building by not having read book one yet.
The overall arc isn't over by a long shot and I look forward to reading more in this series and seeing other characters find their mates. I just hope I see more of Mondo, Pierre, and Eli, as they are fantastic characters that made me smile.
Hot, dangerous, flirtatious, honesty - it's all here and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Definitely recommended by me.

Kim Pook (101 KP) rated Pitch Perfect 3 (2017) in Movies
Sep 2, 2023
Not as good as first 2
Contains spoilers, click to show
We're back for the third and final installment of Pitch Perfect! The Bellas are singing "toxic" as the movie opens on a boat off the coast of France; however, as Amy enters carrying a fire extinguisher, the boat explodes, and the girls jump off.
Backtrack three weeks, and Rebecca is now making music. Unfortunately, a mediocre band with a horrible attitude makes her reevaluate her work, and she decides to resign. The Bellas attend a reunion, but they are given the short end of the stick since they believe they were invited to sing when in fact they were only there to listen to another group sing. The Bellas realise they need to sing together again upon hearing the other group, so they fly to Spain to perform for the army. However, the performance ends up being a competition as all the bands engage in an extended riff off. The bellas begin to worry when they understand they must compete against bands who play their own instruments.
Similar to the other films in the trilogy, the singing portions in this one are fantastic and infectious, and the last song gave me chills. The storyline wasn't as enjoyable this time around, though. Eliminate the entire Amy and her bad dad plot, which was over the top and inconsistent with the rest of the film; otherwise, the film would have been just as entertaining as the others.

Merissa (12934 KP) rated My Soul Immortal (Fated Eternals #1) in Books
May 17, 2023
Don't you just love it when you get a book that is completely different from anything you have read before? I know I do, which is why I thoroughly enjoyed this story by Jen Printy. She has set up a world completely different from anything I have read before, with not a vampire or werewolf in sight. Instead, it is a whole new world, most of which you learn from Jack's point of view. This, as well, makes a nice change, to read it mainly from the male's perspective.
The writing and editing were fantastic and I didn't spot any errors in here at all. There is a lot that goes on, from how we first meet Jack, to his moving to Portland, to meeting Leah and so on. That being said, I did feel that certain parts of the book could have done with being tightened up somehow. It just felt a bit 'slow' in places, which is not a bad thing!
For a fresh and new story with excellent world-building and characters, then I can definitely recommend this book. I am looking forward to reading more in this series, as I certainly want to know how the new trainee copes!!

Merissa (12934 KP) rated Supermoon: Cade & Sal's Story (The Dark Cities Trilogy #1) in Books
May 20, 2023
You know, it's been so long since I read a 'vampire' book that was different, but this one has ticked that particular box for me, along with many others. The world has changed, and not everyone thinks that it is a good thing. The vampires are now ruling supreme, whilst shifters are the ones providing the muscle on the farms and mines, working in harsh conditions; and the humans are slaves, and have to wear red to show their position as a 'blood bag'.
This story really starts when Cade is chosen to represent his city in a fight in which there is literally only one winner. It is last one standing (think of Roman gladiators!). Sal is chosen to be one of the human servants who will look after the shifters until such time as they go and fight.
This book is violent, funny, vicious, and hopeful. My heart was in my mouth every time a vampire came near Sal. Cade does a fantastic job of trying to speak to Sal without the vampires knowing. With sweet, yet hot, romance, this book was a delight that I just couldn't put down. I am definitely looking forward to reading more by this author.

Merissa (12934 KP) rated The Scout (Legends Of Pern Coen: Fated #2) in Books
May 23, 2023
THE SCOUT is the second book in the Legends of Pern Coen: Fated series and we continue with Bran and Seren's story. OH. MY. WORD!!! There is no middle book dip with this story! Instead, there are twists aplenty and an ending that will leave you gasping. It is SO good!
Bran and Seren are a wonderful couple and I love how their story progresses. I won't be sharing any spoilers, don't worry, but I will say that a lot goes on for them - some good, some not so good. Domhnall is still hanging around and going down in my estimation more and more. As for Aengus, my guess was correct but he is being played and it is breaking my heart. Alannah, I had such high hopes for but it seems she has been corrupted by Fianna. What will the future hold for Bran and Seren, as well as Alannah and Aengus?
This story will take you along, leading you on a merry dance as you read through the pages, completely immersed in the story. It is a very emotional read, especially that ending. I honestly can't wait for the third and final instalment. Absolutely fantastic and HIGHLY recommended by me.
