"As far as the modernists go, this is neck and neck with Beckett for number ten (that’s cheating, I know), but Woolf must win. Like Baldwin, Woolf has made many a top 10 list, but again, there’s a reason: I know of no more gut-wrenching, soaring prose about shared consciousness, mortality and water. Truly a book for the cradle to the grave."

"David Lean again, in perhaps the best translation of a Dickens novel to the screen, and surely the greatest of Dickens’s novels too. Crisp, brilliantly cast, a flawless rendition of the period, and amazingly faithful to the novel, Great Expectations is the model that every Masterpiece Theater rendition of an English classic strives to emulate, only better, far better than that."

Just want to say better movie than the version that came out at the cinema did it need to be 4 hours long probably not. nice to see characters like cyborg getting a chance to shine in this version than they would in the theatrical version. Overall a far superior version of a movie that delivers what the original couldn't

"“It’s by far my favourite film and so different to anything I’ve seen before. It feels like an artform in itself. I think I could just watch that movie and no other for the rest of my life and not feel as though I’d missed anything. It’s basically three men walking around a field. That’s all it is, yet it’s utterly mind- blowing.”"

I enjoyed this but very similar to the Guest List, perhaps not quite as intricate. I found it quite frustrating that we got to meet so many characters but very few of them were actually involved with the final plot. Also the decoy was FAR too obvious.

This is one of the most artistic and original pieces of writing I've read in a very long time. The characters are drawn with both gentle and swift strokes, revealing far more about them in a few words than other authors do in whole volumes. On a whim and a hope, Evie signs up to learn how to train dogs, but the school she's going to is anything but a normal kennel. Maybe that's for the best, because nothing has been normal in Evie's short life so far. During the early part of the 20th century, despite slavery having been long over, equality was still far in the future, especially when it came to interracial couples, and even more so if one of them was Jewish. I wish there half-star ratings on these things. I really enjoyed Cain's and Charlie's story. However, so far in the series, it isn't my favorite. If I could, I'd rate this a 4 star while Ten Tiny Breaths and One Tiny Lie would be rated a 4.5. Alas, we can only give a full star, so I've rated it a 3.
