Formulaic WW2 action horror Overlord (2018) is Nazi movie you may be expecting. #Review
Much less of an out-and-out horror film than the trailers would suggest, “Overlord” is, in fact, a brutal and tense World War II action adventure which belatedly takes a horror turn in its final act.

As stylish as it is, it doesn’t stray very far from the ‘big book of war movie tropes’ as rewritten by Spielberg’s “Saving Private Ryan” and much of its sound and fury war-is-Hell big moments have already appeared in the marketing...

My vote for GOTY
A kind of alt history world where prehistoric meets futuristic. Take down, control, and run for your life against robotic AI controlled animals and evil bandits in this open world rpg. Great gameplay, gadgets, story, graphics, and just down right enjoyable to play. It's in a league of it's own as far as story. Unlock the mystery behind who you are and why the world needs you, along the way you will.meet characters that will make.you miss them when it's over, enemies who will make you think to beat them and hunting like.never before.

Game Night (2018)
Game Night (2018)
2018 | Comedy, Mystery
Funny, surprising comedy
I wasn't expecting much from this film, probably just 90 minutes of spousal competitiveness and awkward banter between friends. I was pleasantly surprised to find it had a story (quite a complex one for a comedy) and a few proper laugh out loud moments. Far from focusing on the game night instead, that is used more of a background and a link to some of the odder characters involved.
The chemistry between Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams is top-notch and enables most of the humour.
A strong recommendation for a decent funny film with a decent plot.

Last night a conversation on the way home about children’s tv shows was completed by a walk down memory lane courtesy of YouTube who allowed us to listen to our favourite tv theme tunes.

Ads are far more prevalent than they were.

Everyone thinks they can be a YouTube star - NEWSFLASH they can’t

Watching a video about training dogs and suddenly some very disturbing scenes appeared (thankfully YouTube acted swiftly and the explicit scenes were gone)

Expected more
I don't know if it was because my film had a high bar to hit, in terms of being part of the Potter world or just my own hopes for the film. But I was a bit disappointed, the creatures were amazing and it was wonderful to see more of them than in the up movies, however the story line was a bit weak and predictable in places and I feel the movies as they continue will move too far away from the creatures and more on a pre hp history lesson

Dec 31, 2019 (Updated Dec 31, 2019)
My top 10 films of the year...

1. Joker
2. Midsommar
3. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
4. Doctor Sleep
5. Avengers: Endgame
6. Marriage Story
7. Toy story 4
8. Us
9. John Wick 3: Parabellum
10. Spider-Man: Far From Home

I still haven't got round to watching The Irishman, Parasite, El Camino, or Dragged Across Concrete yet so I'm sure this will probably change!

Also, Frozen II just missed out, but it's legit great 🤞

My pick for most disappointing film of the year goes to The Lion King without a doubt.👎

Second of a series set (so far) in the late 1950s in coastal Devon. Main protagonist is a female reporter for a local newspaper but has a past life in wartime naval intelligence.

I read the first book in the series a couple of weeks back and this one I received via Goodreads.

I enjoyed both stories, but I didn't think they were really great either in the way they were written or in the construction of the mystery plot. They were enjoyable enough books, but not quite so good that I want to hang on to them to read again.

Rocketman (2019)
Rocketman (2019)
2019 | Biography, Drama
A far cry from being an impersonation or a caricature, Taron Egerton delivers an astonishing full-bodied performance who is clearly in his element paying homage to this musical great, whether it be the display of sheer showmanship or searing emotion. The pain that lingers behind those eyes and spills into the delivery of its songs, you can’t help but hang off every lyric he utters. In one sequence, director Fletcher poignantly pans over the rainbow that dominates his hat and it is the perfect metaphor to beautifully display his character trajectory, both personally and professionally.

Dramatic
I did enjoy the book by the end and the story was interesting. It just seemed very dramatic and at times cliche. The main character was diificult to believe, as the blurb describes them as a 13 year old boy. The language used by the 13 year old boy was a bit far fetched and he came across wiser than his years. I realise it is written as a looking back novel but it was difficult to like a 13 year old that speaks like a 30+ year old man.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name, I think the main draw of this for me (and, I'm sure, many others) is Angelina Jolie's character of Fox, with lowly frustrated office worker Wesley (a pre X-Men James McAvoy) discovering he is the son of a famous assassin, and that he shares his fathers almost superhuman killing ability.

There's a fair point to the criticism that this is almost a Matrix rip-off, but I have to say: this is far nastier (doesn't shy away from the guts and gore aspect) and filthier (language wise) than that earlier movie.
