Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated Land (Stranded #1) in Books
Jan 12, 2018
[Theresa Shaver] tells a story of survival and how when the world collapses people can either rise up and do the right thing or become evil. [The Land] starts with teenager at Disneyland when an EMP hits and disables all technology. Luckily the students have a teacher who encourages them to get home although she must stay with those who won't leave. Home is Canada. The small group divides to those who choose to go by sea and those by land. This follow the trek aver the mountains and through an increasing panicking population to get home.
The plot was fast paced and well written and the characters were a mix of those you liked and those you wish would be eaten by a bear. In other words it was well balanced.

Gray Moon Rising (Seasons of the Moon #4) by S.M. Reine
LOVED THIS SERIES!!!! Yes, they are aimed at Young Adult and No, I'm not. That did not stop my enjoyment of them one iota. This book has everything that you could wish for in the final book in a series and enough left to keep you wanting more. Luckily for me, there is more, which I'm just about to go and get!
SM Reine has kept the quality and entertainment going throughout the four books and the character development has been a wonder to read. The plot is fast-paced and edgy.
Definitely recommended to one and all, not just YAs, especially as you can now get this as a box set too.

Amazing read!!!!! I could not put the book down. I was unsure how this horror story was going to play out as I am not familiar with the myth but can say that it was very well written and not in the slightest gory. This story is very chilling, creepy, fast paced, and above all nail biting exciting. The writer has created characters that drew me in from the beginning, from Jemima, her Great Uncle Tomaz, crazy Mary (homeless lady), the kids at school (bullies/school crushes), to the hateful school governess. These characters were beautifully crafted and well written.
NOTE: A few may find the sexual element of this book unsettling; however, I think the author was tactful in writing about the taboo subject in this horror novel and handled it very well.

Monsters and Man pain
Supernatural for me is really hard to rate because personally, I break it up into two:
Season 1-5 are pure just amazing the monsters of the week are all just as interesting as the main plot that starts to build-up near the end of season 1. The writers found such an amazing balance between myths and character development that you just get hooked so fast and they stay so strong for five season which is pretty hard to do in my opinion.
Now season 6 - current is an entirely different story while not completely terrible and some of the seasons being pretty good as a whole I feel like they really lost their footing after season 5 and just never really recovered all the way.

Great adaptation (4 more)
Funny
Fast paced
Good dialogue
Good action scenes
Vulture could have been better (1 more)
Plot of 2nd half pretty stock
Great, comic faithful version of spiderman.
Really enjoyed watching this wise cracking version of spiderman leaping around in an even more comic faithful version than Sam Rami's version. If you liked Spidey's guest appearance in Civil War then you'll like this. Definitely appeals to a younger audience but older comic fans like myself will enjoy watching our childhood heroes come to life. On the downside I did find the Vulture to be a little dull as villains go and the second half of the film was perhaps a little formulaic, with a contrived plot twist, but I still enjoyed the film as a whole. Recommended - if you like super hero films, obviously.

WARNING: Do NOT read the first Editorial Review at Amazon, just titled Review (it says it's a Kirkus review after the fact), it gives away the whole book.

I enjoyed this fast and easy Gothic read - my first Anya Seton book! Not much to say, the plot was predictable, yet absorbing, the characters were fine - although Miranda was a bit too distant as the heroine, and the little historical tidbits were interesting, although they didn't quite flow with the storyline.
One of the reasons I read this is because I've seen the film version of Dragonwyck playing on TCM and/or FMC, and I plan to catch it next time! :D

I totally didn't notice this was religious fiction when I entered the giveaway, but figured I'd give it a chance anyway. Besides, I still enjoy the Chronicles of Narnia.
Okay, I reached 130 pages out of 240 and I just cannot read anymore. While there are some interesting ideas within, this reads like a rough draft. Too much happens too fast for anything to sink in as nothing is fleshed out. It's all a series of "and then this happened and then this," etc, and mostly just telling instead of showing. Characters need more than a name to make them feel alive, scenes need more than just an action or two, and the story just felt lifeless. Sorry, I tried.
Received through Goodreads First Reads giveaway, along with a lovely bookmark.

Brilliant. I enjoyed it.
I have been wanting to read this book for a while and the cover definitely caught my attention. It is a story full of twists, turns and definitely unexpected, shocking outcomes. I would never have guessed at all. Very cruel and devious. Full of secrets, lies and deceit.
An easy to read, fast paced thriller and mystery. Kit and Neve are as bad as each other! I actually loved Jake and Lucies characters. Jake didn’t deserve what happened to him. A real page turner of a read… I found myself getting very angry towards the end and outcome I just don’t understand how someone could do that to Poppy for their own sake… Poor Poppy my heart was with her the whole time.
I would highly recommend.

Great fight choreography (1 more)
Amazing action scenes
I'm gonna need guns, lots of guns!
Another action packed John Wick film. It has more action scenes than crammed into 2 or 3 similar films. It's what we expect with the series now, very simple on the storyline with tons of fights, shootouts, chases. I would say this is better than the last one. The fight choreography is amazing, fast and frenzied without actually being edited so that you can't make half of it out. You can see every move, block, punch and kick in this. Whether it's with fists, knives, guns or even books it is just a higher standard to most action films.
So if you want a violent non-stop action film from start to finish this is the film for you.

When I first began watching this, I was not convinced it was going to be good.
I have to say, the fast pace, stylized action/music score scenes and the witty screenplay had enough to win me over. Very entertaining throughout other than maybe the ending was a little far-fetched I guess.
If Kevin Spacey is never going to act again (seems almost certain at this point) this film is a fitting swan song for him and his memorable list of acting credits.
Director Edgar Wright continues his streak of entertaining quirky hits like his previous films Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
