Rachel King (13 KP) rated Iron Kissed (Mercy Thompson, #3) in Books
Feb 11, 2019
This was by far my favorite book in the Mercy Thompson series. I loved the in-depth introduction into the Fae culture without losing the werewolf focus of the series. I did not like so much the complete lack of anything vampire, but I suppose one can't have it all.
The scene in which Mercy is made to drink from the Fairy cup and the aftermath was incredible, powerful writing and not likely something I will forget anytime soon. I don't recall if I have ever read a rape scene from a perspective such as Mercy's, and it really opened my eyes to such a nightmarish experience.
I also found the dynamic between Ben and Mercy afterwards to be both moving and fascinating, since I got to see beneath Ben's shell to who he really is and what makes him tick. Even though I disliked Ben intensely at the start of the series, he is growing to become one of my favorite characters.
I was a bit disappointed with the ending, as the whole book was building up to her joining with Adam, and then when the book finally gets to the point, I don't get so much as a single kiss. Boo. Hopefully in the next book, Bone Crossed, a little more romance takes centerstage.

Just as good as the first
When I read Mask of Shadows I was blown away by Linsey Miller's book. I loved Sal and so many of the characters. They were truly lovely. It was horror filled love letter written and I loved everything about it. When I saw that Ruin of Stars was up on NetGalley, I knew that I had to read it! When I was accepted as an ARC reader I did a little jump of joy as well.
Just like Mask of Shadows, Ruin of Stars brings us the wonderful character of Sal. I honestly loved the gender fluid nature of Sal though at times in this book I felt is was a little too preachy on sexuality. What I loved about it is that though slightly preachy at times, Sal is still Sal. Sallot is written well and isn't a gender fluid character just to be gender fluid and I loved that Sal was so beautifully written.
This book revisits all of our favorite & least favorite characters from Mask of Shadows, you see Sal trying to cross off his list. You also see the struggle of all of the characters when it comes to living, dying, and everything in between.
The descriptions, the characters, and everything you loved about Mask of Shadows is here. This is one of my favorite reads so far. I loved it so much, I refused to finish it for the longest of times. If you liked the first one, you'll love this one too.

Lindsay (1717 KP) rated The Moonlight School in Books
Mar 11, 2021
Are you looking for a book that is based on illiteracy? This book called "The Moonlight School" is about that, and a little mystery is popped in as well. It seems like this is mostly about the mountain people that are in Rowen County.
This book is a few main characters, Cora Wilson, Lucy Wilson, Angie Copper, and Finley James. One other one that name is Brother Watt. The author pops a little romance in this book as well. However, most of this book is about learning to read and write.
Will they be able to get the folks' help in the hills to learn to read and write? Will the Moonlight School campaign be stopped in its tracks? Will Lucy find her sister, or will she accept god answer? There seems like there some romance going on, and will Lucy choose Andrew or Watt?
My favorite is learning about how the night schools started. I love the fact that we know about illiteracy and how it the solution came about. This book seems to occur based on actual historical events. That seems like a good idea.
If you are a book fan, well, this is a book you may want to read, It about books and teaching an adult to read. There some mystery in the plot, The author wrote a perfect story plot.

Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated Conversations with Amelia in Books
Jan 12, 2018
[Conversations with Amelia] by [Kathleen Schmitt] cover both the history of one of the greatest women, Amelia Earhart, but also the growing pains of a family after WWII. All seen through the eyes of Hannah, who is very naive in the beginning. Her confidant is an imaginary Amelia who gives her good advice and keeps her "flying right".
I have been looking forward to reading this book because Amelia Earhart is one of my favorite figures in history. I was not disappointed. It is well written and interweaves the history with the events happening in the story so that it has a really nice flow. I highly recommend reading this book.

Whatchareadin (174 KP) rated Scrappy Little Nobody in Books
May 10, 2018
I was first introduced to Anna Kendrick from the movie Pitch Perfect. She was a cute little nobody who made a place for herself in the acapella world. Although my favorite movie of her is The Accountant with Ben Affleck. I really enjoyed this book which I think was made even better with her reading it. It chronicles her life from growing up in Maine to getting jobs in low budget movies, and theater productions. I didn't know she had done so much before Pitch Perfect. The book was funny and she made you feel like you were sitting down to talk to your best friend.
Liliannar (58 KP) rated Stranger in a Strange Land in Books

This book was phenomenal. I listened to it through an audio version and would highly recommend doing so. When this was recommended to me by a friend I skeptically gave it a try and it has turned out to be one of my favorite books of this year.
This book takes you through a journey of discovering quite a bit about human-kind and our nuances to be awful to each other. This can be extremely humorous or extremely sad depending on the circumstances. There are also parts of this that will push your boundaries of what you find to be morally or ethically acceptable.

A Train Wreck
I think its important to mention that this is one of my favorite book series. If I hadn't had already read the books before seeing this movie maybe I would have thought it was a little better. Probably not but you never know. As someone who loves the book series I have to say this is absolutely one of the worst movie adaptations I have ever seen. The story line was off, the characters were completely different, and at some points it was so bad it was laughable. My biggest hope for this series is that eventually a studio will pick it up and actually do it justice.
