Representative of late-period Coppola in just about every way: ostentatious visual display (this >> ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ข >> ๐๐ฆ๐ฃ๐ณ๐ข๐ด๐ฌ๐ข >> ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ณ๐ต๐ช๐ด๐ต), uneven and often nonsensically crammed narrative (even if it does [beneficially, this time] lack the ambitious delirium of ๐ ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ต๐ฉ ๐๐ช๐ต๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ต ๐ ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ต๐ฉ), underwhelming coda, and an emphasis on weird + sprawling conversations over all else. The final act crumbles mostly, but otherwise found this to be quite enchanting. There's something about watching Vincent Gallo act that's just so magnetizing, I couldn't look away - the dude is crazy good in this (even if you still can't convince me him and Edward Norton are different people). Took me a bit to really get a feel for the fierce lancing of overly-pretentious, dickheaded artists rather than the worship of them as I initially gauged - as well as this just being a rock-solid story of art and family dynamics (helluva twist too [if underplayed], and the segments where trauma is expressed through stage productions are ๐๐). Wish it rebounded in the end but nonetheless it's compelling in spite of its flaws.

Kim Pook (101 KP) rated To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You (2020) in Movies

The movie picks up where the last movie left off. Lara Jean and Peter are officially dating and life is good, but when Lara Jean receives a letter from John Ambrose - the final love letter recipient - she starts to reply but shoves her reply in a drawer and it's forgotten about. That is until John Ambrose shows up at the same place Lara Jean volunteers at and her old feelings come rushing back, she then needs to decide if Peter is the one for her or if it's John Ambrose she wants.
After the perfect ending of the last movie, I felt a sequel wasn't needed but I wanted to watch it anyway, and I was right, a sequel really wasn't needed. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a terrible movie but I felt like it didn't have the same feel as the first one and a lot of the time I felt annoyed at Lara Jean. However, I did have to remember that she's only 16 years old and it shows what many teens that age are going through.

A 21-Centuries-old Celt, and he has an Irish Wolfhound named Oberon, with whom they share a telepathic bond/communication? Look, you had me at the inclusion of a furry/fuzzy dog! However, it went downhill thereafter!
From the first page, there is a playful sense of adventure within, and that is good. Unfortunately, having the lead character "knock boots" with any of the Tuatha Dรฉ Danann who appear in the book left an unpleasant taste in mouth. Further exacerbating the taste was the objectification used in his description of anyone of the opposite sex! Wow! It started to feel like a ride on the Misogynist Express..and that was only the first six Chapters (I couldn't go any further)!
It's a shame, too, because the series has garner a more than fair amount of praise, and with the upcoming Dabel Brothers comic adaptation of the series, I was looking forward to this. Ah well, there's other, less sexist/misogynistic/etc. fantasy/urban fantasy out there. You (and I) can do better to search elsewhere..

Erika (17789 KP) rated What We Do in the Shadows - Season 2 in TV

Another Great Season
What We Do in the Shadows has to be one of my favorite shows. It never fails to make me laugh at least once an episode.
All of the guest stars this season were well used, I thought Haley Joel Osment was hilarious in the first ep, which tends to be his MO now when he appears in anything. It definitely started the season off with a bang.
The Colin Robinson-centric episode had to be one of my favorites. He's often an ignored character, and while he is annoying some of the time, it was nice to see an ep focused on him.
I really liked Guillermo's arc in this season as well. Him joining the group of vampire hunters on accident because he was looking for more victims was really amusing.
I didn't feel as if there was a bad episode out of all of them, which is always a good thing.
Thank god there's already a season three in the works to be released next year!

LeftSideCut (3776 KP) rated Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons - The Movie (2020) in Movies
Jan 12, 2021
Not all of these DC animated movies are going to be as good as The Dark Knight Returns and Knights & Dragons is solid proof of that.
Its a straight down the middle entry for DC, it's got some enjoyable action sequences and the animation looks decent enough, although recently, a lot of these movies are starting to look the same. It doesn't have a unique feel to it in that regard.
Deathstroke has always been a compelling anti-hero, but compelling enough to carry a full length feature? I'm not so sure, and I still remain unsure. There's a fair amount of depth on show here concerning his family life, but honestly, the plot is a bit of a snore fest at times, although I did like to see some more minor characters such as Lady Shiva and Bronze Tiger get some screentime.
Its not the worst DC animated film out there, and is still worth a watch for fans of the brand, but it's not essential viewing.

Kristina (502 KP) rated The Wife Between Us in Books
Dec 7, 2020
Let me start by saying this: That was unexpected. I usually write notes when I read, jot down theories and emotions, express suspicions or ask questions. While reading this book, that same sentence, "that was unexpected", was repeated over and over. So many people have raved over The Wife Between Us, I was curious. Not to say I'm highly disappointed, but I suppose I feel as if the book didn't live up to the hype. Granted, there were several twists and turns - some I was able to guess correctly and others I could never have predicted - but, overall, it was pretty good. The most intriguing part, for me, was trying to figure out if Vanessa was actually crazy, like her mother, and if I was falling for her altered reality. I would read and read, painting Richard as the villain, then she would say or think something that would make me pause and wonder just how like her mother she really could be. That ending, though, was a total bombshell!

Kirsten Myra Edwards (303 KP) rated Deceptions of Chenille in Books

Worth a read
For starters: Wow! What a rollercoaster. This fast paced novel keeps you on your toes and once you start you can't put it down.
You either follow the story from either Daniel; the one left behind; or from the side of Chenille; the one you learn to love despite her mistakes.
Despite the pace of the book; moving weeks months within a matter of pages; and the switching of sides it is easy to follow with plenty of twists to keep you turning the pages.
If you do have to put it down it is very easy to pick right back up without too much hassle.
You learn so much about these characters you feel their emotions; you cry for them, you fight for them and you care for them as of they are your own.
If you are after a good read to read wherever you are; on the school run (guilty!), on the bus or tube or snuggled by the fire with a hot chocolate then this is the one for you.

Sarah (7800 KP) rated Dumped, Actually in Books

Fun and heartwarming
Nick Spaldingโs books can always be relied on to be lighthearted and entertaining, and Dumped, Actually is no exception. To be frank, his writing style is basic and uncomplicated, and itโll never win any awards. However that doesnโt make it any less enjoyable.
I decided to read this as it rather reminded me of my doomed relationship last year, and there is a lot in this book that i could relate to about how I felt (and still do). Of course Ollieโs exploits are entirely over the top and farcical, but thatโs what makes this book so enjoyable to read and itโs laugh out loud funny in parts. Thereโs a moment just over half way through that throws the momentum of the book a little, but itโs still very heartwarming and has a lot of feel good moments and messages. Part of the ending is a bit cliched and the writing does get a bit basic at times, but itโs still a rather fun moving book that really got me thinking (and crying).

Action Packed Read
I will start by saying that whatever you do, don't start to read this right before bedtime because once you start you won't be able to put it down as that's what happened to me and so I read it until I reached the last page.
The author's worldbuilding is so realistic that you are immediately transported into the middle of this post-apocalyptic world that has been decimated by a virus and you can practically hear the ever-present crows.
Sawyer, Sara, and Mason are truly a force to be reckoned with as we learn of their heartaches and witness how strong they are to endure the harshness and perils of the world. All the characters, from the good to the bad are strong and well developed.
The author has written this in such a way that you often feel like it could really happen. This action-packed powerhouse of a story will keep you on the edge of your seat and I highly recommend it

Jordan Binkerd (567 KP) rated The Scorpion King 2: Rise Of A Warrior (2008) in Movies
Sep 5, 2019 (Updated Sep 5, 2019)
Michael Copon almost sells being a young Rock. (3 more)
Karen David does her job well: look good while kicking ass.
Fight scenes are well executed
Sets and locations are pretty
The Minotaur and giant scorpion sequences look like crap. (2 more)
Did we need this? I feel like we didn't need this....
No Rock
Unnecessary and derivative, but not bad for direct-to-video.
Was this necessary? Did we really need to examine the Scorpion King's childhood and early adulthood? The film raises more questions than it resolves, in that now they have a thriving kingdom to dispose of somehow before the events of the original film. That said, the film is decently fun to watch. The performances aren't any worse than you'd expect from a movie like this, even better in some cases. Michael Copon was even trying to infuse the character with some of The Rock's mannerisms, unless that was unintentional. The fights are fun to watch, which is mostly the point here. The scenery, locations, and general production design is on point. Bottom line: it's not great, but it's better than I feared.
