Funny and sad

Super. This novel is written with a first person childhood narration. Whilst this is problematic with regards to the authenticity of McCourts memory, you can not criticise him for his portrayal of childhood innocence. The novel is fantastic, great visual images, told from a convincing narrator, covering topics such as religion, poverty, alcoholism, hunger, death and growing up. I just loved it.

I struggled from the start with this. It wasn't grabbing me at all--maybe because politics bores me to death--and the fact that it was in third person when I've gotten so used to reading first, so when they got to the sex scene, I just gave up. I don't see much point in reading something like that if I'm not into the couple.

Not for me.

"I think I must have been the first person to review this film in Canada. I was the film editor of the campus newspaper in 1978, and the film distributor thought it would connect with students. I still have the original press kit somewhere. I hadn’t been this immersed in a crazy dream since I saw Un chien andalou, and still firmly believe that in heaven, everything is fine."
