It's #FolkloreFriday 🌾🌕

The final Folklore Friday of August, the full moon tonight, and the last sheaf standing.

Welsh and Celtic harvest folklore understood the spirit of the crop as a living presence that retreated before the reapers into the final standing grain as the harvest progressed. By the time the field was almost done, everything it had accumulated through the season resided in what remained. The cutting of the last sheaf was a ritual moment — who cut it mattered, what happened to it mattered, and the customs that grew around it across different regions of Wales reflected a community that understood its relationship with the land as reciprocal and ceremonial rather than simply practical.

The corn dolly kept through winter preserved the spirit of the harvest until spring. The Hag of the Harvest carried an honour that was also a responsibility. The last sheaf held the wisdom of the whole season.

A fitting end to a month of accumulated wisdom, upstream journeys, and hazel nuts falling into sacred pools. The harvest is in. 🌾🌕

Gorse was an absolute delight! Atmospheric, dark, lots of fae, folklore and rich in 18th century Cornwall beliefs and attitudes. In Gorse, superstition, fae and religion collide - and the result isn’t pretty.

I loved all the fae: both friends and enemies, the power that the main character, Nancy, could draw from the land and the religious zealot who had a habit of messing things up by ignoring the true laws of the land (and those laws aren’t tied to Christianity).

Very enjoyable.

Okay, don't get me wrong. I can see what people see in this series. I don't know what I thought I'd expect considering I generally don't like fantasy, and I definitely don't like Harry Potter. It's just not my jam. In many ways, Akata Witch is very HP, just in Nigeria. In other ways, it's so steeped in African mythology, it's a true breath of fresh air from the normally very European folklore that fantasy so often draws from. It's definitely a book I'd recommend.

Weird or spooky history and folklore, sometimes cryptids
A well-researched show that gives facts and insights into everything from big foot to serial killers to Amityville horror. It goes all over the place, which I both like and dislike, but I always download it right when comes out. There are (melo)dramatic pauses, inferences about what people were feeling, and putting some reactions and stories into local and historic context. All presented in a soothing baritone. So, if that's what you're into, you'll love Lore.

I picked this book as an irish theme for my book club.
At first I struggled with it, for the first 200 pages his over excessive use of description really bugged me and I found myself skim reading parts of it.
And although I really love Irish mythology and folklore, his use of it seemed irrelevant in places. As though he was trying to show off with the amount of folklore he knew.
After a while though the story started to flow better, and it captured my attention a lot more. I connected to the characters more and enjoyed the adventure in the story. There were still parts where I didnt exactly know what was going on. It seemed sometimes that the author was only half including you in the story he was envisioning in his mind.
I also didnt feel there was much need for a love story between two of the teenage characters, I felt that those parts were slightly cringey to read and thought the atory would have evolved just aswell without it included.
In all though I enjoyed it and will read the next installment.
