I did the thing you're not supposed to do, I judged a book by its cover. The cover just drew my eye and I decided to read it without knowing the premise. The author made both characters relatable, even though they were the typical trope of uptown girl and downtown boy which could have been unoriginal and boring. The switching of perspective between the debrief/interview (the present) and the two main characters (the past), added a nice depth to the narrative and storybuilding. The characters were not flat and this allowed them to develop over the course of the story. I do wish we had gotten a little more backstory to make them more fully developed, but it was still good as written. The world building could have definitely been more expansive. They were on an entirely foreign world and I had to rely almost entirely on my imagination to populate it. Despite those concerns, I really enjoyed reading the book and definitely recommend it. I will be reading the subsequent books in the series.

The direction is superb
Dialog is gritty and great.
A great 2 sided coin spinning on the edge of a 3rd story window...
This shouldn't be the first oscar Scorsese wins, but tragedies happen every day I guess... That said this is deserving of the honor, more so than most oscar winners. The Cat and Rat runaround is interesting to watch unfold. plus lines like "I'm the guy who does his job, you must be the other guy." make this a great watch.

A little bit of trivia:Martin Scorsese did not realize this was a remake of a Hong Kong movie until after he had agreed to direct it. It's the only remake of a foreign film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. Martin Scorsese said that he was surprised the film had won, because the film is such a tough, nasty, and violent film, he never thought about the idea of awards while he was filming it.

Here's some great alternate movie posters to enjoy as well.

410. Greed. A satirical look at the super rich. We meet Sir Richard McCreadie and it's his birthday coming up so he's gonna throw himself a party like the Romans used to party. And leading up to the party, the movie goes splitz on ya. Its the tale of young Richard and how he got to where he is. Its part documentary about the garment business as slave labor in foreign lands, also talks about immigration issues. Another huge chunk is Richard on some sort of business ethics trials, then it'll swing back to the party planning where we get to see his turbulent family life, his relationship with his son falling apart, however the main theme is the party, and keeping up appearances. It was an oddball movie, wasn't expecting it to be all over the place. I did enjoy it, I thought Steve Coogan played a cool though somewhat sleazy businessman, who really doesn't give a rat's ass about anyone else but himself. Filmbufftim on FB
