"When I was 12, I spent three weeks isolated on the island of Sardinia with my father and his young family. I found a copy of Clavell on the bookshelf in the home that we were renting and it saved me. Historical fiction became a lifelong love, and James Clavell a guide."

"When I first read this book, it was out of print. I felt I’d found a treasure when I uncovered a tattered copy online. It’s unapologetically feminist, queer, third-world, woke and woman. I am so glad it’s back in print for a new generation craving this kind of centering and elevated consciousness."

"I saw Flowers for the first time during grad school in the early 1990s, and Rossellini’s deceptively simple depiction of grace and faith has never left me. I always wanted to see it again, so I was beyond thrilled when I found out that Criterion was releasing it. Hands down my favorite Rossellini."

"So often we feel the need to travel far to find treasure—that’s what the shepherd boy protagonist, Santiago, in “The Alchemist,” believes he needs to do. After an exhaustive, yet richly colorful journey, he finds that the greatest treasure can be found inside. This simple little book contains hugely profound meaning."

A sweet book, and a nice little love story placed in a situation that isn't often found in novels. Drori has a good eye for finding a unique twist to the usual "boy meets girl" plot. You can read my full review here https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2014/11/28/abandonment-and-devotion/

The writing seemed hard to read and concentrate on. The storyline wasn't all that bad, which is what kept pushing me to continue reading. Also, it was easy to like Evan, which definitely helped persuade me to finish the book. Unfortunately, I found myself skipping most of it and reading the dialogue.

3.5 stars.

For me the first 50% of this book was very slow and rather, dare I say it, boring. It just didn't gel with me. After the 50% mark things started to happen quicker and I found myself getting really into it. Therefore, I'll give it the three and a half stars.
