Kittyz98 (13 KP) rated The Tattooist of Auschwitz in Books
Dec 12, 2018
I received this book for free on Netgalley last year. These types of books really interest me, and I found this to be so beautifully written and emotional. The book is basically an account of a real man and him meeting his wife in such an awful place but finding love while trying to survive. I loved this book, and I felt as if it really taught me more about auschwitz.
David McK (3773 KP) rated Assassin's Reign (Civil War Chronicles #4) in Books
Jan 30, 2019
The fourth of Michael Arnold's Civil War Chronicles, this (I have to say) I actually found to be heavier going than any of the previous. The bulk of this novel concerns the Royalist siege of Gloucester - which, in hindsight, would prove to be the turning point of the war - during which (as any fictional hero would) Captain Stryker finds himself on both sides of the line - echoes, here, of Sharpe's Tiger!
Deborah (162 KP) rated The Wicked Boy: The Mystery of a Victorian Child Murderer in Books
Dec 19, 2018
I wanted to read this after seeing Kate Summerscale at the Hay Festival talking about the book. I found that I felt very different at the end of the talk to how I felt at the beginning!
A really interesting story and Robert Coombs becomes a real person to the reader across the book.
This would be a good read if you are interested in social history and/or psychology.

Deborah (162 KP) rated England's Queens: From Boudica to Elizabeth of York in Books
Dec 19, 2018
Interesting overview from the early and mythical queens right up to Elizabeth of York.
Overall I enjoyed it, but the later chapters I found disappointing. Probably because my own historical knowledge is stronger there, but I thought the later chapters were a rehash of something from books a few years out of date and a few things were plain wrong (e.g. Elizabeth Woodville did not have a big funeral).

Sammie Hilton (3 KP) rated The Heart Goes Last in Books

Not your usual Atwood story
Compared to other Atwood stories the heart goes last takes a different look on modern relationships while also addressing an odd storyline aha, not your usual dystopian fiction but does still have Atwood traits. I found it funny at times and it does stick out, I do usually recommend this book if anyone asks!
Otway93 (580 KP) rated Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) in Movies
Nov 3, 2019 (Updated Nov 4, 2019)
Tension (1 more)
Jump Scares
Acting (2 more)
Originality
Dependence on Jump Scares
Ok, but far from groundbreaking.
After watching the first Insidious (which was reasonably enjoyable), I found myself wanting to see the second, but was disappointed with what I saw.
Chapter Two was basically the same as chapter one, not particularly scary, and relying heavily on jump scares. Jump scares are fun, but not when it's the only scare the film provides.

Charlotte Ozanne (108 KP) rated Get Smart (2008) in Movies
Nov 10, 2019
I'm not one for laughing out loud often, but this film made me do just that. However, there were a few moments in the film which didn't engage me and I found myself flicking through social media or even falling asleep (I was extremely tired though). I'd still say it's worth a watch because it is a funny film, with an excellent cast too.
Night Reader Reviews (683 KP) rated Barney's Great Adventure (1998) in Movies
Jan 22, 2020 (Updated Jan 22, 2020)
I can remember watching Barney when I was little but this movie was one that even I did not like much. I tried watching it with my own children here recently and found that they didn't like it either. I am not sure why but unlike the tv show this movie just can't seem to hold their attention.
Rebecca Billcliff (2409 KP) rated Everyday Is Christmas by Sia in Music
Jan 26, 2020
Behind the times as usual, I found this over Christmas, and loved it! So catchy and festive, have not enjoyed Christmas songs so much since The Darkness released "Don't let the Bells End". Candy Cane Lane is great, and the music video is fun to watch. Snowman is also fantastic, I was singing them all December long!

Not a rival to GOT
Personally i think its a complicated storyline to follow and doesnt really flow. I found myself having to force myself to carry on watching it and it never really grabbed meand engrossed me.
I have seen a lot of reviews that have said it rivals or is better than GOT, i have to disagree GOT captivated me from the get go and the Witcher just didnt
