Change of style but still a good read.
In this instalment of the story, we hear from both main characters point of view and to begin with, this was quite disconcerting, however, with already having an emotional investment in the characters I carried on and found it really works. A rewrite of book one to also be in the style would be great or the next book making it clearer why the story is told in this way. In this volume I found the ending to be left in a very uncomfortable place, so if you don't like being left hanging, perhaps you should make sure book 3 is next to you before reading this one.
The character's adventures continue here, with the advancement of the back story as well as adding intriguing additional stories which drive the story forward well, keeping me engaged throughout.
I would recommend this as a good read for all. Just remember my warning about the ending.

"I bought this at university, mainly because of the cover art, I admit. I had a very small record collection then. You did in those days, and because you didn't have a lot, you'd play every record again and again. My dad, Tom, was a bandleader, so there was a lot of jazz in the house. He liked people like Count Basie and Woody Herman, but he stopped at Coltrane. He found the modernism of it difficult, but I loved it. It felt like a big thing for me, when I was a precocious teenager. The first jazz I had found for myself!

This is a real fork-in-the-road album for jazz, too, from 1958, a proper boundary between hard bop and the future. The three-part horn arrangements are something I tried to emulate on the first track of [Everything But The Girl's 1984 album] Each And Every One, too – in my own way of course. The album was only his second, and him early on as a session leader. There's so much life in it, and so many ideas.

This is my latest book club read. I read the blurb and on first thoughts, loved the idea of this book. It sounded exactly my cup of tea. Then after a few chapters, the writing style was bugging me, i wasnt sure if this book was for after all. I found it so hard to connect with the characters because of how distanced I felt due to the style of writing...
Then about a quarter of the way through something clicked and I could not put this book down. I absolutely loved it every opportunity I got I found myself reading it
I love the characters of Bridie and Ruby and the relationship that develops between them. Every character that is introduced seems to have some importance in the story. And the story itself with all its twists and turns is a masterpiece.
I definitely want to read more by Jess Kidd, shes one of the best authors I've read for a long time. #jesskidd #thingsinjars #victoriannovel #anatonomy #detective #bridiedevine
