Heathski (173 KP) rated Bloody Rose in Books

Unexpectedly good
Ok I wasn't sure I was going to like it. The beginning didn't endear me to the characters, and seemed a bit too far fetched even for a fantasy novel. However I kept reading and found myself not wanting to put it down. The author writes in a rich descriptive poetic style, very beautiful at times and when it's not, it's mildly funny and a little crude.
It certainly does not lack depth in any of the characters, which was what concerned me at the beginning. The plot is skilfully woven together and left me wanting more.

Brilliantly written (1 more)
Twisted and dark
Deliciously dark and macabre
While this is not my usually fantasy book to pick up, I found myself being drawn into the nightmare unable to look away. The characters, while not very likeable, are interesting, and you do care where their story will end. It's been compared to Goremenghast, which I haven't read so can't compare, but it is well written. It's gothic steampunk, grim, dark fantasy, melancholic tragedy with horror sprinkled on top. I loved it and felt sad I'd finished it, but couldn't wait to get the next in the series.

Auburn (57 KP) rated The New Guy (and Other Senior Year Distractions) in Books
Apr 10, 2019
I would rate this a solid good. Mediocre but enjoyable.
Jules is your non average high school senior. Focusing only on getting into Brown and the newspaper. That is until the new guy, a former boy band singer, comes to school. Now she must decide what is more important. With a lot of problems, misteps, and mistakes Jules must learn what it means to be a good friend and a team player.
While I enjoyed the premise and the cute couples I found myself skimming to get to the end faster.
Perfect for those who want a lot of drama with their stories.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Out of Blue (2019) in Movies
Apr 10, 2019 (Updated Apr 10, 2019)
Bafflingly impenetrable crime drama. A young woman is found dead from a gunshot wound; assigned to the case is veteran homicide detective Mike Hoolihan (Clarkson) who finds it opens up many unanswered questions from her own past, raising many demons.
Sounds fairly straightforward, but film's many strange pretensions - discussion of quantum theory, astrophysics - and dourly humourless tone make it intensely hard work. Why does title not include word 'the'? It's a mystery. Why does this review not include word 'the'? Well, you've got to do something for entertainment, and this film certainly doesn't fit bill. Feels weirdly incompetent on many levels.

A year in the life of a young woman who moves to New York and gets a job in a high end restaurant. Tess is 22 and lives life to its fullest - that’s if you count drinking hard, taking drugs and hardly sleeping as living hard. She learns a lot about food and wine, but not so much about personal relationships.
This was heralded as the book of Summer 2016, but I’m afraid I found it boring. Nothing much happens, she’s so self-centred as to be a rather unpleasant character. Reading this feels like time I can’t get back, I’m afraid!

Emma (519 KP) rated Little Bee in Books
May 14, 2019
I have recently been in a reading slump and have had to give up on three books that I just couldn't finish. Until I found Little Bee, the story captivated me from the first chapter. Instead of being told from a generic point of view it is told from two separate people's points of view. Which I loved. The two stories come together very nicely at the end through many ups and downs. Little Bee humbled me with her story and I can't wait to read more by this author.

Jordan Peele doing what he does best
I believe that Jordan Peele (one of my favourite directors recently) has truly found his forte. Successfully, he creates another amazing horror film that leaves you tingling with suspended throughout the entire film. The cast also have been chosen perfectly for their roles and the characterisation that comes with them, however this can only be done with skilled actors such as Lupita Nyong'o. Only problem was the tethered lady's voice which sounded like she needed a good cough (just joking ? ). Brilliant film though

Thor: God of lightning
Theres good comic book movies, theres bad comic book movies and then theres Thor.
Chris Hemsworth stars as Thor, marvels answer to Gladiator.
When a truce is broken and Thor's home comes under threat by long time enemies, he ignores the command of his Father Oden and declares war. Because of this he is stripped of his position and banished to Earth. Found by jane, an astrophysicist, he must earn his powers back, stop his untrustworthy adopted brother Loki (Tom hiddleston) and save 2 Realms from total destruction. Thor is a fun film for everyone.

ArecRain (8 KP) rated Twin of Ice in Books
Jan 18, 2018
I honestly found this book uninteresting and frustrating. It was boring at best and the only reason I continued was to finish the novel to get to Twin of Fire. Not only that but the characters were frustrating to the point that I almost threw the book. Jude Deveraux seemed to have make her characters so dense and ignorant that they didn't understand something that was continually and blatantly said to them. I couldn't imagine people that dense. Had I known this book was going to be the way it was, I would have never started it.
