Mountainous melodrama couples a rather corny, obscurely allegorical plot to some stunning visuals to reasonably engaging effect. A dancer (Riefenstahl) is drawn to the Alps, where she falls in love with an engineer; confusion and jealousy lead to jeopardy, stoic heroism, and ultimately tragedy.
I found the dramatic elements of the film to be rather hard going, and Riefenstahl's dancing, rather than evoking desire, just reminded me of a drunk woman trying to start a fight at a wedding reception. However, there are some fantastic compositions and the mountains still look awesome nearly a century on; the film may feel a bit pretentious but its imagery remains powerful.

Ian Parr (9 KP) rated Wild Tales (2014) in Movies

"Six stories are told in this movie, and all are entertaining and enjoyable. However, because these are short stories, I found some ended too soon, left me wanting more, to find out what happened next, and one or two had disappointing endings. The pick of the stories are 'El más fuerte', about a road rage incident that escalates and the last story, 'Hasta que la muerte nos separe', about a wedding that goes very very badly! I would have liked some connection between each story, like a character appearing in each, but as it is it still comes highly recommended."

I love reading this book. I found the world that Ishiguro created to be well built where while it had the aspect of fantastical or sci-fi, it really felt real. From beginning to end I really felt connected to the characters, and I loved the way in which the book was written as Kathy thinks back on her childhood. Ishiguro is certainly a master at writing story that has an organic flow of the way in which people think back on memories, pieces connected bast on subject and feeling rather than in a linear form. I would highly recommend giving this book a read.

nope nope and nope i just couldn't force myself to read past the second chapter. i read fast and lose myself in a book but the fact that i could easily be distracted my lint instead of reading this book told me there was no point in going forward. The ending of the first book had me wanting to read this second one but the first chapter had me putting it back down for good. yes there was quite a bit of sex but the story line wasn't gripping me enough just found it bland i need dark n dangerous and this just isn't it sorry

Kim Pook (101 KP) rated Horrible Histories: The Movie (2019) in Movies

Not too bad
I remember reading horrible histories when i was in school, i have never watched the tv series though so wasn't sure what to expect. At first i thought it was incredibly cheesy, it was like watching a pantomime. But like being at a pantomime i eventually got into the storyline and found the songs catchy, there was a few famous faces including kim cattrall and warwick davies.
It wasn't too bad a film but i feel it could have been so much better aimed at adults rather than family.

Unique plot (1 more)
Surprisingly good acting
Groundhog day slasher!
Firstly this is a comedy horror not a straight up horror film.
I have to say I expected nothing from this film, I knew none of the actors and was just looking to pass an hour or so.
I'd like to say I loved this film, it was very 90's slasher poking fun at itself and not taking itself very serious at all, I found the plot unique and was honestly quite surprised by the "killer".
I think if you are looking for something light and breezy rather than a straight up horror this is perfect!

It's not deadpool
It's a bit of fun, I enjoyed the movie. I didn't go expecting it to be a cinematic triumph as most Dc films have let us down so far. (Shazaam, joker, hold your heads up high) but I came away not disappointed. Its a fun mess of a movie that is all over the place kind of like the mind of one Harleen Quinzel. Ewan Mcgregor is a decent villain, Margot is stunning even when she is battered and bruised.
A great concept for a thriller that just didn't feel like it reached it's potential for me. I listened to the audiobook narrated by January LaVoy.
When Rachael's daughter is kidnapped not only does she have to pay the ransom but also kidnap another child thus continuing a chain that has been supposedly going on for a while.
Rachael rapidly goes from about to break down to kick ass, which maybe the situation caused but on the whole, the characters didn't work for me and I found myself bored and often disbelieving of their interactions. It has a decent pace but just a bit of a meh thriller.

Erika (17789 KP) rated Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Vol. 1: Aphra in Books

When Doctor Aphra was first introduced in the first Darth Vader run by Kieron Gillen, I really liked her. She was a fun character and I found her intriguing. Apparently, I wasn't the only one, because Marvel ordered a series about her.
It was smart to have Gillen write the first part of her run, but I began to find her character kind of annoying and so predictable. From this volume, her character has began going downhill (I read Vol 3 before this one and JFC, she just grows more annoying).
Parts of the story were interesting, but overall, it was just kind of meh.
