I found the set-up of the book to be perfect (the writing, the plot, the characters, etc.) (0 more)
A blatantly honest, gripping story about family.
"It blew me away. I found myself constantly highlighting quotes from it, stopping to think about how incredibly relatable it is. It is a book not only about death and grieving, but the ghosts that follow you throughout your life. Anne Enright speaks your innermost unspoken thoughts, and she does so unapologetically." -my bookstagram account, rorythereader.

"When I was 12, I spent three weeks isolated on the island of Sardinia with my father and his young family. I found a copy of Clavell on the bookshelf in the home that we were renting and it saved me. Historical fiction became a lifelong love, and James Clavell a guide."

I forget where I saw a recommendation for this book (who am I kidding, probably People or Entertainment Weekly, about the extent of my "literary" reading these days), but it wasn't quite what I expected. Less mystery surrounding a disappearance/death and more "human interest" about a-- truth be told-- rather unlikable family.

The novel chronicles the Lee family, who wakes up one day to find their eldest daughter/sister, Lydia, missing. Eventually Lydia's body is found in the local lake, and the family is turned upside down.
It goes without saying, but it's really a rather depressing book. Lydia's parents, Marilyn and James, are just awful, and not just because they are grieving. I found very little to like in them. Lydia's siblings, Nath and Hannah, aren't nearly as bad (Hannah is truly the redeeming one in the family), but still. It's hard to root for a family that you don't much care for. There are also some strange side plots involving the siblings that never really seem resolved.

As a parent, I found aspects of the book interesting -- the way Lydia's mom pushes her so much to attain a dream that really belonged to Marilyn. In addition, the family is still reeling from Marilyn's brief disappearance before Hannah was even born. Ng does do a good job of showing how much this impacts the family, especially the kids. It's a little frightening, really, as the sinking realization of how every little thing you do can follow your children, even 10 years later (though in Marilyn's case, she really does some damaging things).

Still, those redeeming moments couldn't salvage the whole book for me. I liked it well enough, but I was left at the end feeling a little depressed and annoyed and wishing more loose ends were tied up.

"No one does family sagas like Kristan Higgins. She brings incredible emotion with so much wit and humor that you’re pulled in from the very first lines. I found myself laughing out loud on page one. Always the Last to Know is another winner with characters you know and root for all the way through."

True Story
First published in 1979 – The Uninvited is the true story of an ordinary family living in South Wales who found themselves entangled in a series of unearthly encounters in 1977. At first the manifestations were minor. UFOs were sighted in the area, huge burnt patches were found in the fields, television sets and cars blew all of their wiring…but before long the Coombs family was visited by weird lights, huge white figures and a glowing disembodied hand. Their lives were disrupted and they were terrified by something unidentifiable and unimaginable. They were a focus for The Uninvited. For the first time in decades, the book has been revised and renewed with all new additional content and digitally enhanced photographs.

Once again Horan has found a powerful woman behind a famous man. Although the book is on the long side, I would be hard pressed to figure out where to cut it to make it more concise. You can read my review here https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2014/01/22/jekylls-and-hydes-in-the-stevenson-family/

"Just keep swimming … just keep swimming …"

Set after Finding Nemo, this see's Ellen DeGeneres Blue Tang - the undisputed start (for me, at least, of that earlier movie) in her own headline movie, when - due to events - she suddenly remembers her family and sets off on a quest to reunite with the same.

As always with Pixar, impeccably animated with a strong message about the importance of family (even 'found' family), this - perhaps - suffers somewhat in comparison with Finding Nemo in that we've been there, done that.

That, and the fact that the Human world (seemingly, or at least, that's it how it felt to me!) plays a larger role than in the previous.

Gotta love Dory's friend Sigourney Weaver, though!

So true
Sequel to why mummy swears. It's like the author has been into my house and wrote the book on my family. Not that I swear that much. I found it really easy to get into and it was hard to put down, I just kept thinking 1 more chapter.
