What happens to kids when both of their parents are taken from them? Do they learn to survive with the situations they are given or do they find a new way to live their lives?
Porsche Santiaga was the middle daughter of Ricky and Lana Santiaga. When her parents were both arrested one night, and she her younger twin sisters were snatched up by the Bureau of Child Welfare. After being tossed from foster home to foster home and no word from her family, Porsche found herself in upstate New York in a juvenile detention center. There she met Siri(the gentle girl who was always there to protect her), Riot(the head of the Diamond Needles), and other members of the Diamond Needles to help her through her sentence.
When she is finally out on her own, she tries to find and help her family the best way she could. She is a natural born hustler so finding work for a fair wage was not a problem for her. She was only 12 years old and making over $1000 a week. She wasn't selling her body, or drugs. Just being the best person she could be and helping people in the neighborhood.

I must admit that I was not too drawn into this when I had seen the trailer. However more and more of my friends and family had started to watch this and their enthusiasm made me give this a go. I did not regret it! I found myself invested and entertained after only one episode.
The characters are distinct and unpredictable. My friends and I each have different favourite characters, which demonstrates the diversity of the characters offer. They are also flawed and this makes them relatable.
I like the unique plot and that the side characters are just as engaging as the main ones. I am definitely recommending this to anyone who will listen and I am eager for season two.
I will say, the only thing that set my teeth on edge was the treatment of Vanya. The family neglected and effectively emotionally abused her. This does not excuse her actions at the end of the show but rather irritated me when they got to swoop in and act like heroes for intervening in the explosion that they set in motion. I am guessing that this will be addressing in the second season however, and the fact that I am invested enough in the show that this annoys me, tells me that this is definitely done well.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review. First, let me say, ÒOur Little LiesÓ was very well written. That being said, it took me forever to read it. I had to read more than half of the book because I realized why. Susan Watson was able to capture how it feels to be Marianne, the wife of a completely controlling man, who slowly, methodically, makes her doubt herself and wears her down without her realizing it. This story hit so close to home and was the first book I read that was able to show how a seemingly confident, capable woman could become completely dependent on her husband.
The story was well written and moved quickly. The characters were real and made you want to help everyone in the family. The book also questions how far would you go to protect your family? What would you be willing to do? It is a psychological thriller is an honest roller coaster of lies and questions which shows even the Òperfect familyÓ has something to hide.
I am glad I found Susan Watson and, even though she does not usually write thrillers, I look forward to reading another of her books. I give this 5 out of 5 stars.

I admit that I have a slight obsession with Downton Abbey. It sucked me in from the start. And now my curiosity as piqued as to what life was really like in the early 1900s. Therefore, I am branching out a bit in the books that I am reading.
The World of Downton Abbey is a companion guide to the second season of the beloved BBC Masterpiece show Downton Abbey. Not only does it outline the lives of the Crawley family during the first World War, but also gives us a peek at the lives of the real aristocracy of England. Family life, style, life in service, romance and war are a few of the topics covered in Jessica Fellowes book.
I greatly enjoyed reading and learning more about British culture. It helps me to understand the characters in the show better, as well as characters in the books I read. There is a lot of history to be found in period dramas and I do love learning about it. I was happy to learn that the show has a historical advisor Alastair Bruce (known as The Oracle) that does not hide in the shadows. He makes certain that everything is proper and accurate. Any Downton enthusiast would enjoy this book, but it is also a great read for learning more about the era.

I can't decide how I feel about this book. I must admit that it is heavy going and you really have to get used to the speech in the book. The novel is based around poor farmers that have had to borrow money from the bank in order to survive during a rough harvest. However when they can't pay the bank back, they are driven from their home along with many other families. Steinbeck explored the hardship of poor farming life as we transition into a modern era with machinery that is replacing jobs. Throughout the novel, it is very cutting to see their struggles to be able to find work and afford to feed their family. I did find that at time the book felt like it wasn't going anywhere but I guess that is the point of it. Steinbeck is describing a mundane hard life where finding work is a struggle. I did enjoy the book but at times found it very difficult to perservere with it. The ending was also a bit confusing and left me with a lot of questions as to what happened to the Joads family. I would recommend for you to read this book but proceed with caution because it is hard work!
