"An old French film with Simone Signoret, and I think Paul Meurisse is in it. It’s the film that terrified me as child, with this very simple scene where she pulls a curtain back in an upstairs window, and he’s watching from the yard. That was actually probably the first horror film I ever saw. It was a very scary. I was a small child. I just remember the simplicity of that moment when she pulled that curtain back. So there’s that, and they did the remake with Sharon Stone that was not very successful and wasn’t very well made."

This book was almost like two books in one. One being everything associated with the food in France and the other being all of Mah's tangents that could almost be described as a coming-of-age story. To defend this, one could say that without the sauce, the meat will seem too dry. On the other hand, without a good enough sized portion of meat, the extra sauce will just end up being a congealing puddle on your plate. Think this book may have fallen victim to the too much hype before I read it syndrome, I kept hearing what a great procedural this was but as solid as it was it didn't blow my socks off.

Unusually, with a police procedure, I liked the main characters but found the actual story/case somewhat lacking. With a bit too much showing behind the curtain, I didn't find the investigation into the gruesome crime all that fascinating. The interesting side case was wrapped up too early and I'm just left hoping our intrepid French/Scottish investigator will have a better outing next time.
