Dean (6926 KP) rated Death on the Nile (2022) in Movies
Feb 27, 2022
This doesn't differ too much in terms of the core story or characters. We do get a little look at Poirot's past. It looks stunning, the cinematography stands out as well as the opulence. From the Fashion, the steamer boat, all the details show the class of high luxury and wealth of the lead characters.
It's a bit raunchy as well to make it a bit more modern.
Some of cast are unrecognisable, Russell Brand looking very different. French and Saunders do seem a bit miscast though.
Some of details of the plot did seem a bit more rushed in this version. Also lacking a bit of charm of the original. Still a good effort and better than Murder on the Orient Express I felt.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Raw (2017) in Movies
Feb 10, 2018 (Updated Feb 10, 2018)
Ah yes, but as well as a degree of gore (weirdly, the most disturbing part of the film for me was watching someone receive a rather inept bikini wax), the film also has interesting and thoughtful things to say about peer pressure and the social demands placed on young women by the modern world - whether they don't even try to fit in or just try too hard, the results are often harsh.
The ending almost seems to be trying to reposition the film as a black comedy, but most of the way through this is ferociously intelligent and self-assured film helped a lot by Garance Marillier's remarkable performance. If you only watch one feminist cannibal allegory this year...

Awix (3310 KP) rated Godzilla (1998) in Movies
Mar 24, 2018
Some good effects sequences, particularly the two big battles between 'Godzilla' and the US armed forces, and the leads work hard to be likeable, but on the whole the film seems much more interested in American pop culture (there's a pastiche of Jurassic Park, jokes about Elvis, some really unsubtle digs at film critics who didn't like Independence Day) than in the Japanese pop icon it's supposed to be about - the monster is lacking in grandeur and majesty, doesn't have Godzilla's special abilities, and is basically just a big lizard you can kill with conventional weapons. (No wonder the beast is just called 'Zilla' in its subsequent appearances.) Not awful on its own terms, but then it was never going to be judged on those.
