Trish (4 KP) rated One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories in Books
Feb 8, 2018
I'm not normally a short story reader. I chose this because I thought it would be a funny read that would work well as an audiobook. plus, I was swayed by the "guest" readers on the audiobook.
Not only did it make me laugh but it made me think! Some of the stories were very thought-provoking, which surprised me. I enjoyed it. A few of the stories dragged on and on. My favorites were those that came abruptly to an end. They made me laugh and pause to think, instead of spelling it all out.
I was not. B.J.Novak fan from television really so I wasn't predisposed to like this book. It was just enjoyable.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2346 KP) rated The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Join Princes Fredric, Gustav, Liam, and Duncan as they must ban together to stop an evil witch from taking over their kingdoms. Of course, first, they must learn their own strengths and how to get along with each other.
This book was laugh out loud funny from start to finish with wonderful character growth and an engaging plot. My only complaint is that I didn't read it even sooner. With strong male and female characters, I think both boys and girls will equally love it. And adults will delight in this middle grade fractured fairy tale as well.

Just plain bad
I'm starting to wonder if Trainwreck was a one hit wonder for Amy Schumer. This film is absolutely terrible. It doesn't start off well as it introduces Amy's character as such a detestable self obsessed person that you have no interest in her wellbeing and really can't stand her. So her development over the space of the film is wasted. There's barely anything truly funny in this film, most of it is just cringingly bad. The only decent scenes are those with the brother and the US state department agent, but sadly those are few and far between.
The only good thing about this film is it's thankfully short running time.

Fifty Shades of Grazing
Profoundly beautiful and thoughtful film that seeks to address a number of deep philosophical issues in a comparatively brief running time - the boundary between person and animal, the importance of being in harmony with nature, and the dehumanising effect of living in modern western society.
Or, if you prefer, just another technically brilliant and very, very clever animation from Aardman, managing to tell a witty and satisfying story with virtually no dialogue required. Very funny and utterly charming at the same time (and it really does touch on the stuff I mentioned at the top of the page, too). I tell you, films like this are wasted on kids.

So, so good. Better than the 1st

Such a great movie!! I would absolutely pay to see this movie a second time and will pre-order this one. My little girl asked to see it again before we left the theater.

Lou Grande (148 KP) rated Benjamin's Parasite in Books

Black comedy wrapped in body horror
I love body horror. I always have. And I like Jeff Strand. He's funny and articulate, and his stories pack a hell of a punch. Benjamin's Parasite is no different. Benjamin, an unassuming English teacher, is infected by a parasite that both ravages his body and makes him want to do Bad Things. He's kidnapped by Julie, a beautiful but inept bounty hunter, as they're tracked across the country by people who want the specimen back.
Imagine Nick Cutter's "The Troop" if it was written by Simon Pegg. This is a really fun read, and I recommend it to anyone who isn't too squeamish and loves a good horror comedy.

Dianne Robbins (1738 KP) rated Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997) in Movies

Why didn't I watch this sooner???
If you're like me, your high school years were not perfect and you always felt a bit like a weirdo or an outsider. If so, you'll enjoy this movie. It's hard not to love these characters. They seem vapid at the start of the film but towards the end, you see their love for each other and the kindness in their hearts. Throughout the movie, you see their friendship and support of each other. It's a sweet movie. Being a child of the 80s, I love the 80s references. Janeane Garofalo's character is funny in a dark way. And, OMG, there's everything to love about Alan Cumming. I adore him.

AT (1676 KP) rated One Piece, Volume 01: Romance Dawn (One Piece, #1) in Books
Sep 25, 2018
Before I finally started reading One Piece, I knew it was wildly popular. The books and merchandise are all over, and have been for years. I guess I can see why it's popular now. The story is silly and hilarious! Such a fun break from reality. Luffy is a young man that has the simple goal of becoming the king of pirates. He's clueless, has no sensible fear, is randomly looking for a pirate crew to call his own, and oh yeah. He ate some magical fruit as a child and is now a rubber man! The premise makes sense, but the situations and characters along the way in his journey make it all funny!

MoMoBookDiary (20 KP) rated Two Steps Forward in Books
Oct 1, 2018
"Two Steps Forward" is a mix of travelogue and fictional romance. It is an interesting concept: a novel written by two authors, husband and wife, Graeme Simsion and Anne Buist, in alternating chapters. The narratives follow two walkers along the Camino pilgrim trail.
I was taken with this book from the start however it sadly it didn’t do it for me. There were a few funny moments and it was very well written and researched but was paced much slower than I prefer. I did not “dislike” this book but I can’t say I enjoyed it either.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this book.

Kids will love it, parents will tolerate it
I took my daughter and 8 of her friends to see this for her birthday "treat". They all loved it. Having seen very little of Mr Bean etc, I guess they had never really seen anything like this. Pure slapstick. Rowan Atkinson's rubber face and totally cringeworthy dancing.
The storyline is fairly basic Connery-era Bond, with a few funny moments, and simple enough to keep children engaged and not too daft to annoy adults.
While this was far from a great film, I have seen a lot worse recently, and the kids all enjoyed it. (their rating = 8/10, mine = 5/10, generous average = 7/10)
