BookwormMama14 (18 KP) rated The Healer's Apprentice (Hagenheim, #1) in Books

It was a little over a year ago that I first read a Melanie Dickerson book. I fell instantly in love with her gift for stories! This year I have resolved to read more of the books that have piled up on my To-Be-Read pile (island...OK, it's a planet!) and I am making good progress so far. The Healer's Apprentice is a retelling of The Sleeping Beauty, which is my ALL TIME favorite fairy tale.
Rose is a kind and gentle young woman with a gift for storytelling, and a passion for life and Lord Hamlin, however, he is already betrothed. She struggles find her destiny. She thinks she knows what she wants in life, but it isn't until she lets go and hands her future path over to God that she begins to feel peace. Wilhelm, Lord Hamlin, has never had a problem fulfilling his duty as the future Duke. But when he meets Rose his life is turned upside down and he is conflicted by the pull of his heart and his responsibility as his father's heir.
A sweet romance and a life lesson, that when we follow God's calling and do the right thing, He will bless our path. Although it may be in a way we least expect.
I am so glad I finally read this story and look forward on catching up on the rest of the Hagenheim series in the near future. Don't miss A Noble Servant, book 3 of the THornbeck series, releasing in May!

If you were to ask me to name a Jack Campbell series of books, or main character in said series, I probably would have said somebody like 'Black Jack' Geary, the main protagonist of his 'Lost Fleet' series and it's spin-offs ("Beyond the Frontier" and "Outlands", with guest appearances in "The Lost Stars" or following his ancestors in "The Genesis Fleet").
Which mad it all the more surprising, to me, that there is absolutely no mention (yet) of him or his ancestors in this, the first in the latest series by the author.
What we have, instead, is a sci-fi (natch) time travel romance action-adventure, following the 'Alloy' (Human with non-Human DNA) Genji who is somehow thrust back in time following her witnessing of the destruction of Earth, and is now on a self-imposed mission to change the circumstances leading to said destruction.
In the 'present day' (our future) of the novel, she meets semi-disgraced officer Kayl Owen of the space fleet the Earth Guard, who - unlike his superiors - is not concerned about the non-human DNA in her make-up.
Surviving numerous assassination attempts and growing closer along the way, the two characters are attempting to change the future (I was getting shades of The Terminator here, with "The future is not set ... There is no fate but what we make..."), uncertain if even doing so will lead to Genji no longer even existing.
I'll be following this series with interest.

I really enjoyed this book. I found that the storyline was not predictable and that I was constantly on the edge of my couch reading this book. I finished this book in 24 hours. It was extremely good and I found myself captured by this book.
The writing was better than I expected. Most romance books that I have read are poorly written and filled with smut. I found that this book was well written and I didn't feel like the sex was too over the top.
The characters were lovable and I found myself laughing many times. I loved all of the characters and felt like the author knew what she was talking about.
All in all, this was a very good book. I will definitely look into Cindy Gerard's books in the future.

Hmmm...I read this because after finishing Cut & Run yesterday I was still in the mood for a little m/m romance. Unfortunately this didn't hook me as much and I was a little bored by the story line, that's not to say it was bad, because it isn't. It just didn't hold my attention as much as a thriller.
I've even had a nosy at the rest of the series and after reading the acknowledgements section after the story, I have to admire the author for her...balls? in writing a series that spans twenty years and involves the development of Eric and Nick's life's while involving a wife for one of them.
I'm not entirely sure if I'll continue it yet, but I'll certainly keep it in mind for the future.

Director Ari Aster returns with another homage to the classic horror movie Wicker Man. Every 90 years, a secluded Swedish town holds a festival to honor the old gods. It is expected that anyone raised in the town will ensnare gullible undergrads to serve as guests of honor of the festivities. While this serves as the plot of the surface story, the true horror is the toxic romance of a dying relationship. The woman is an emotional burden who is starting to see the cracks in the relationship. The guy is hanging out with his guy friends too much, he has no future goals and emotionally immature, and is about to forget her birthday. When she suffers a major tragedy, leaving her completely alone even if she has that boyfriend, she tags along to Sweden.

Can love span centuries? Two hundred years ago, a jealous sorcerer robbed Aine and Aengus of their future together when he ended Aine's life. Now a spell will offer them a second chance...But when Aine returns as Abby to Ireland, can she and Aengus reignite their love? Have the lifetimes apart dampened the love they once felt for each other? Or have the centuries provided the sorcerer with enough power the keep them apart for eternity?
It was a very enjoyable read! A very sweet story with a few dramatic moments! The little prequel story after Was also very sweet! If you like a good old romance with a magical twist you will enjoy this Duet.
