A deeply weird and genuinely erotic little curio where a pre-𝘛𝘾đ˜Ș𝘭đ˜Șđ˜šđ˜©đ˜” Robert Pattinson plays... er- *checks notes* Salvador Dali (donning all kinds of ridiculous wardrobe choices) who has a lot of gay sex and angrily paints all while spouting nonsensical metaphorical dialogue in a humorously cartoonish Spanish accent. Needed to be a little more controlled, leaner - I zoned out during at least one third of the talking bits, but it looks pretty! Not too shabby, I'll happily take this artsy oddball over most of the recycled biopic dumps up for awards contention today. Pattinson's full commitment to throwing himself at the wall for roles was evident even this early in his career.

"Speaking of Giorgio Moroder, you have to give it to the guy. What a brilliant team, him and Donna. From the very opening 'Once Upon A Time’, this is a kind of a mini-musical and completely sums up the studio 54 NYC disco era in one fell swoop. This record could actually turn a straight man gay - especially the trilogy 'Now I Need You', 'Working The Midnight Shift' and 'Queen For A Day' It must have cost an absolute fortune to record with all the brass and string arrangements, but this is Donna at her absolute post 'I Feel Love' best. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall."

"I revisited this recently after telling some friends to watch it. When you think of the time this was made, and you realize this is a story about a pregnant girl who decides to get her own place and make best friends with a gay man, it’s pretty astonishing. Everything about her life and the morality depicted in it is so 1950s, but she’s this outcast, and is not even very likable. But you’re completely on her side. Can you think of another female role like that? It’s a really complicated portrait of a young woman who doesn’t want to get married and just wants to live in her weird house with her friend."

"I discovered Fassbinder senior year of college, and I couldn’t believe it. Both of these films are perfect to me. Ali tells a grotesque yet delicate love story that, to my dummy liberal arts mind, was an analogy for the challenges of a gay relationship in the repressed Germany of the 1970s (at least that’s what I said in my thesis). Maria Braun is the tragic, triumphant story of a woman who does what she must to get by, but loses herself in the process. They both make you wanna dress up and smoke opium and fuck people you meet late at night in a bodega, even if you’re not into that."
