"Why not see this movie twice? Even if you don’t like it, it’s worth revisiting. Films like this don’t come along that often, or perhaps ever. Granted, I suspect that it’s far more exciting for filmmakers than for general audiences, just because Cuaron did with this movie what we all wish we could do: he took his time. It’s easy to make comparisons to Proust, except that the film isn’t really Proustian; it isn’t fluid enough, it doesn’t resemble the memories it’s based on but the real events that begat them. It’s closer to Knausgard in that regard, but let me dispense with literary comparisons because this is a movie with a capital M: it’s been declaring itself so very loudly all fall, and I’m happy to join the chorus."

I must admit, I'm not overly familiar with Chinese cinema, but I really hope that a boyband music video immediately playing alongside the end credits is the norm - it really tops off this surreal experience.

Everything in this movie is completely over dramatic, from the characters in general, to the hugely cliché ridden action script. The CGI flits rapidly between being half decent to dodgy as fuck. Jason Isaacs adopts an uncomfortably out of place South African accent, and the action scenes are so so. And in all honesty, I low key enjoyed it. It might dumb natural disaster fodder from Simon "Con Air" West, but I would happily take this over the 2012's of this world in a heartbeat. Skyfire is average at worst, and wonderfully silly at best.

"It was just a very definitive moment in not only West Coast hip hop, but hip hop in general. It was a bridge - it was young hip hop with an old soul, which made it alternative. Rap was still fairly young at that point. I had a friend who was a very cool guy, he had the weed, and always had a demeanour about him - 'I know something you don't'. He had an advance copy, which made it even cooler. Almost every break beat there is is used on that album, which gives you an unwritten indication that anyone could have done it - but of course, that's not true. Technically, he started where we all had to start from, which is the bottom. That's what's cool about it."

Ooooo, this is good!

Jane Casey is one of my favourite authors and I love her Maeve Kerrigan series, so when I saw this, I couldn't click fast enough and I was not disappointed; this is a standalone but every bit as good.

This is absolutely gripping from start to finish; full of so much tension and a general creepiness that gets right in your head. The characters are excellent and John Webster is a brilliant "baddie".

This is one of those books when you think you've nailed it and then it kicks you in the teeth and you have to start guessing all over again ... I love it!!

Totally recommended to lovers of this genre.

Thank you to HarperCollinsUK/HarperFiction and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest, unbiased and unedited review.

Oooof, apparently I should have read the synopsis more closely. The writing was good, and I would be willing to try another book by this author.
This book just wasn't my jam, my brain turns off as soon as the story line becomes solely about having kids and sacrificing oneself for family. I can't relate, and I find it completely snooze-worthy.
This rating is so low, because this just wasn't my cup of tea. It only gets a 2 because I liked the writing style. I know it's based on a myth, which is en vogue right now, but why can't strong, childless (by choice) women exist in books? This novel to me was just a growing problem that I'm having with novels in general at this point.
