This was George Saunders' convocation speech that he gave at Syracuse University. He speaks about kindness, and being kind throughout your lifetime. It was a nice speech, but I wasn't as moved as I thought I'd be. I think it's because I recently read Mr. Saunders' short story, Fox 8. Fox 8 was a million times more of an emotional event for me than this speech was.

"I am a big fan of work in any medium that can take on death — being dead, being a soul — in a new way. It shares something with my favorite aspects of George Saunders in its matter of fact dealings with what might be considered supernatural."

"There is something George Saunders said in an interview that I re-read many times while writing my novel. It’s too long for here but basically: characters don’t have to be articulate to be full human beings. He does this so well and I plan on doing it well"

"The kind of book you finish and walk around in a weird fog for a couple days. The coolest thing to me about George Saunders is his ability to create wildly different characters, and make you empathize with each one. As someone who writes pretty much exclusively from my own perspective, this is a mysterious gift."

"What I really liked about the story [Sea Oak] is that George Saunders was able to take his commentary on society—about the TV shows they were watching and the strip club the narrator is in and the different levels of success and if you’re lowered down you get fired in front of everybody … [laughing] But the whole thing in the end was very moving. Very moving."

Dark, disturbing and satirical
This collection of short stories cannot be pigeon-holed. In this oddly disjointed, surreal collection, the underlying issues in modern American culture are loudly explored. George Saunders' breathless writing style floods over terrible realities and hard truths, leaving the reader gasping in its wake.

Tenth of December handles its running themes in a poignant, individual and certainly irreverent way. Narcissistic ideas of charity stems from trivial competition, while sheer denial is shown in the face of true poverty. Generations breed generations, passing on corrupted ideals and traumatic examples. Paedophilia, racism, poverty: nothing is safe from these chastising, powerful stories.

Saunders leaves an expunged, brutally telling view of the American dream. In his futuristic imaginings, he exaggerates the failings of Western consumerism, yet ultimately his message is clear: When one tries to have it all, they're left with nothing.

Quantity not quality
I've had Libby for two weeks now and I've managed to read five of my TBR books on the list - not too bad for a library app. It's easy to use, with a clean interface, and clearly there's a huge stock of works in the system.

The issue now is the fact that I cannot find any other books that I would like to read, and I'll have to wait for another month to get my next book on hold. There are very few new books, and it seems to be missing writings from prominent authors such as James Baldwin, Angela Davis and George Saunders. It is all dependent on how well your local library functions which can be problematic. It seems to be a postcode lottery.
