Awix (3310 KP) rated Colossal (2016) in Movies
Mar 1, 2018 (Updated Mar 2, 2018)
I mean, you have to admire a film for attempting to do something a little bit different, and this is certainly that, and good performances from the leads and an inventive script initially make this a refreshingly original film. In the end though, the sheer oddness of it, a problematic tonal inconsistency, and unconvincing characterisations mean that it doesn't quite hang together or completely satisfy. Still worth a look for sheer novelty value.

ArecRain (8 KP) rated Sleeping Giants (Themis Files #1) in Books
Jan 18, 2018
The title of this is what drew me. Sleeping Giants? Sounds right up my alley. It has been a long time since I read a sci-fi novel that wasn't heavy on the romance/erotica also. However, this novel was captivating. I know there are novels out there told through interviews and the like but I have never read them before. Therefore, it was something new and different. I honestly felt I would have enjoyed the novel more if it had been written more traditionally. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. As someone who loves to thoroughly research things, I almost felt that I was the narrator going through all the relevant information I have collected to put the story together. It was appealing.
Style aside, it also has an interesting plot. Giant robots and recovered technologies are nothing new, but the author weaves a stories that grabs your attention and keeps you turning each page. I was hooked until the very last page. In fact, once I finished, I sat in a daze wrapping my mind around everything I had just taken in.
If the description interests you, I highly recommend that you read this novel. I understand it is not expected to be published until April 2016. It is definitely worth the wait.

TacoDave (3640 KP) rated Astro Bot Rescue Mission in Video Games

Then a few weeks ago it went on sale for $19.99, so I finally decided to give it a try. And I was completely impressed!
This game really makes you feel like you are a giant robot in a world full of small robots. You control one of the little bots through levels filled with platforming challenges, but VR changes how things work. For example, you might want to make your character run back behind you. In a normal game, you'd have to mess with camera controls, but with this one, you just turn your head to follow him.
If he needs to go up platforms to a bridge far above you, you look up and guide him across using his shadow. If you look down and see a hole in the ground with a collectible item, you can guide him down into the hole to collect it.
Basically, it's like playing a 3D Mario game in a whole new way. I was blown away and played all the way through it, then went back to find the collectibles I had missed.
I would recommend this to anyone new to VR. And I get motion sick easily, but this game never made me sick. A+
