jmercado (1 KP) rated Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock in Books
Jan 15, 2018
Leonard Peacock has a mission.
On his 18th birthday he has decided to murder his former best friend and then himself.
Before that, he wants to give the only 4 friends he really has one last gift to remember him by.
The story follows him giving these gifts to his four friends and proceeds to talk about why these friends meant the most.
That writing was a little bland for me and i didn't feel as emotionally invested as i though i would until half way through the novel.
I did manage to finish in one day.
I did enjoy how people weren't completely oblivious to Leonard when he starts giving his presents.
Completely realistic in my eyes as how people can tell something isn't right but still let you stroll on as if things are.
And i really loved that they even made notice that he did have the characteristics of a suicidal person.
towards the end of the book when i finally was emotionally attached, i couldn't stop crying.
Not being emotionally invested in Leonard and how the story ended were a bigger reason as to why i gave this 3.5 stars, but overall i enjoyed this book.

I absolutely loved Kallos' "Broken For You," so I was extremely excited to pick up her latest novel. It definitely took some time for this one to grow on me. The book got off to a slow start and Charles is not the most likable of characters. Still, once I got into the plot, it's a lovely tale and extremely moving. Kallos does an amazing job of tying together her ancillary characters into a beautiful way--not one that's trite, per se, but a manner that seems fitting for each.
Overall, the book is a touching tribute to language, in many forms, and to art, as well. It's also a very insightful look at autism and the toll it can take on a family, but also some of the gifts that those termed as "disabled" by the general public can give to us. Definitely worth reading - just be patient.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.
M.R. Carey is known for writing "The Girl with all the Gifts" among many others. His latest, "Someone Like Me" has been shelved on Goodreads as fiction, fantasy, horror, thriller, and mystery. "Someone Like Me" is hard to categorize but easy to get sucked into. It is a long book with 500 pages so, if you have plans, make sure to set a timer. It was easy to keep reading without a break. I do not want to give too much away. It's a family drama about Liz, her children, her abuse ex-husband, and her neighbors but it is also much more. If M.R. Carey had left out the rest concerning Fran and Liz's alter-ego, the story would be a well written story about a single mom trying to raise two kids. It is the rest that makes the story extremely interesting. I have always been fascinated with Psychology, thrillers, and fantasy. Mix the three together, add some good writing, and an interesting story and I'm hooked. Carey's writing is descriptive but he does not overdo it.
If you like a book that opens with action and requires you to figure what is going on then this is for you.
Ross (3284 KP) rated Rotherweird in Books
Jul 8, 2019
However, the book that follows doesn't really pick up on this premise, and instead the book is more of a modern day Little England countryside romp. For within the area surrounding Rotherweird (now a private town cut off from the rest of British rule) there are access points to a secret other world, where a number of odd creatures are known to reside.
The plot relies on a number of tenuous crossword-type anagrams (but as everyone has such an unusual name, spotting them is impossible) and ridiculous puzzles as to be quite annoying.
A mysterious outsider has arrived and started to upset the introvert community, and more and more of the population begin to find odd relics or events, and once they start to team up they piece them together.
There is very little to distinguish the characters, and I frequently had to try and remember who was who from Finch, Flask, Fanguin, Ferensen, as well as the two almost identical young female characters.
A very frustrating read.

Glenn's friend Terry returns with two other annoying teen jerks and a pretty girl to summon another small demon into our dimension from theirs. It is all fun and games at first when they realize they can get their wishes granted like getting a vintage Corvette or lots of cash, but the fun soon fades when their gifts turn into shit. I mean literal shit (kind of weird). Things get scary then when two of the teens start transforming into weird creatures and Terry and girl "friend" have to band together to save humanity.
I don't mind dated movies since I am now dated myself, but this one just didn't work. Filmmakers of the original were surprised when it was a moderate hit, so they slapped this script together just to get something out there and it shows. The characters are one dimensional and not very funny or interesting and the plot doesn't really go anywhere.
The final 20 minutes kind of saves the film a little with some cool creature effects, but by then it is too late.
