Godzilla Done Right

The latest installment of the monster verse was done very well. Like I have said before, I am a big Godzilla fan. I own every movie. Let me begin by telling the people the whine and complain about the human storyline to just shut up!! If you have watched any Godzilla movie, useless human storyline is a part of every Godzilla. But anyway, this movie is great. They make Kong a character you can identify with. You actually want Kong to win the big battle when it goes down. The organization Apex wants Kong to find the Hollow Earth so they can use the energy there for their own diabolical purposes. At the same time, Kong is actually going to his ancestral home. Meanwhile Godzilla is on a rampage because he senses Ghidorah in the form of a Mechanized Godzilla Apex has built. The two Titans have battle with Godzilla eventually winning the clash. Apex loses control of Mecha Godzilla because Ghidorah has taken over. Godzilla is almost beaten until Kong arrives. The two team up and take Mecha Godzilla down. A very well done movie. This is how a Godzilla movie is supposed to be done. I recommend giving this latest installment a watch

If this story was handled with a bit more bite, a little less austere loyalty to formula than Ron Howard's PG-13 cleanliness then honestly this could have been the solid adventure movie it so clearly wants to be. It's already got the right look for it - with these pretty much perfect sea-faring nautical visuals: rich blues, greens, and yellows smoothly coat dutch angles of people looking wide-eyed into the sky with the wind flowing through their hair and whatnot... it's beautiful until it directly clashes with this indefensible CGI. The whales look like shit and the horrendous green screen work makes everyone constantly look like that last scene from 𝘎𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘪 𝘔𝘢𝘯. The framing device with Whishaw and Gleeson - both of whom are award-worthy in this (particularly Gleeson, giving some of the best work of his career painting a deeply effective complex portrait of this clearly haunted man) - is more exciting and emotive than the actual story, which shambles at such a laborious pace that one can even stop laughing at Hemsworth's piss-poor accent. Just feels manufactured, cuts a bit too much to simulate fun rather than actually having it. Has its moments but you're better off just re-reading "Moby Dick".

Lavish slab of Holmesian schlock, which managed to get Netflix sued by the Conan Doyle estate on the grounds that it depicts Sherlock Holmes having emotions: frankly, this is the least of the film's divergences from the canon. The great detective's slightly manic younger sister is home-schooled by her mother, and then goes off to London when said matriarch vanishes on her sixteenth birthday.
Doesn't really bear much resemblance to the original canon, nor to the realities of Victorian London or much else, really: there isn't a great deal of detecting going on, but there is a lot of earnest messaging about finding your own path and giving the patriarchy a good kicking. Has clearly had some money spent on it; Brown has a certain presence and Cavill, while arguably miscast, is less problematic than you might expect. For a film which appears to be aimed at a fairly young audience there are some moments of surprisingly nasty violence, but on the whole it's fairly inoffensive. I imagine members of the target audience will probably enjoy it a lot more than me; I think I'll be sticking with Young Sherlock Holmes when I'm in the mood for this sort of thing.

The original Leprechaun is so so silly. It's low budget, it's brimming with unfunny jokes, it's not scary in the slightest, but dammit it's hard to hate on it too much.
The characters in Leprechaun are mostly typical easy-to-dislike personality voids (apart from my boy Ozzie), but some of the casting is notable. Of course, a pre-Friends Jennifer Aniston takes the lead and is likable enough, but the main star is obviously Warwick Davis. This being the early nineties, the horror genre was firmly set on its villains being the star, following the success of 80s icons such as Freddy Krueger, and the titular creature takes up most of the spotlight.
The Leprechaun himself is so-so. He's more of a little shit than a full blown monster, and the majority of his one liners aren't particularly funny, but Davis is clearly giving his all in this role, and is no doubt the sole reason why this movie spawned an entire franchise, even if Lep is ultimately a poor man's Chucky.
As far as cheesy horror films go, you could do a lot worse than Leprechaun (it's many sequels for example). It's cheap and trashy, but it's still pretty entertaining.

Experiment Gone Wrong
The Invisible Ray- is a good sci-fi horror mystery film.
The plot: The film concerns a scientist who creates a telescope-like device that captures light waves from the Andromeda Galaxy, giving him a way to view the distant past. Using this knowledge, he travels to Africa to locate a large, unusual meteorite that fell there a billion years earlier. He discovers that the meteorite is composed of a poisonous unknown element, "Radium X". After exposure to its rays begins to make him glow in the dark, his touch becomes deadly, and he begins to be slowly driven mad.
Prior to production, Universal Pictures was originally developing the film Bluebeard for Karloff and Lugosi. When that production did not start, Universal wanted a release by the end of 1935 with Karloff and Lugosi and hired director Stuart Walker and screenwriter John Colton to make the film The Invisible Ray.
The film was initially given a budget of $166,875, an amount described in the book Universal Horrors as "a fairly lavish budget" for an "upper-class B" film. Filming began on September 17, 1935. Filming concluded on October 25 which was over-schedule and $68,000 over-budget.
Its a classic and a good horror film.

Dog Soldiers might be showing its age by now, but damn it's still a ride.
The cast absolutely make it - I've never been one of those "wheeey lads, football" kind of guys, but the group of soldiers that the film follows have great chemistry, and just feel real. I always enjoy Sean Pertwee, and here is no different. I would argue that it's one of his best performances to date, from the fantastic monologue about his mate in Iraq near the start, to his increasingly mad and out of it schtick near the films climax.
Its an incredibly well paced movie as well. It doesn't take long for shit to hit the fan, and the rest of the narrative feels frantic, despite being set in one building for the most part.
There's a good amount of gore, and Neil Marshall is never afraid to show us his werewolves, and they look great! Its all practically done as well, giving us the cherry on top.
Dog Soldiers and The Descent are the two films that truly cemented Neil Marshall as a director to watch. Its nearly 20 years later and it's still a great watch and in my opinion, is one of the better werewolf films out there!

Ah! Melody
Clocking in at under 30mins and 7 tracks this concept album from Gainsbourg is, for me at least, his best and most consistent album. Regulars Jane Birkin (on vocals) and Jean-Claude Vannier (providing the usual high standard of arrangements and orchestra direction) join in on the proceedings. The concept is nothing new to fans of Gainsbourg, as he accidentally knocks a young girl off her bicycle whilst out driving in his Rolls, and then seduces her (as you do).
The tracks are a blend of blissed out rock with lush orchestration and Serge providing the 'spoken word' approach with his lyrics. With the album being so short you really don't have time to get bored. First time listeners may find that a lot of it sounds familiar. It will. Numerous artists have sampled this album over the years and it is considered a precursor/influence to the shortlived Trip Hop movement in the early 90's.
After the albums release Serge put out a concept video (also starring Birkin dancing around alot) giving the album a visual aspect. It's certainly worth seeking out if you like the album.
