Peter Cowie recommended Häxan (1922) in Movies (curated)

"Scandinavian cinema has, I admit, obsessed me for most of my career as a critic. But all credit to Criterion for giving this bizarre and seductive silent film from 1922 the same loving attention as they would a new release by Richard Linklater or Mike Leigh. For extra value, the DVD includes an abridged version of the movie issued in 1968, with a sly offscreen narration by William S. Burroughs."

It was really interesting reading from the Stranger's point of view. I was close to giving it a 3 star review, but something about the ending left me entirely disappointed. I felt like the Stranger became too tamed, more tame than he would have liked, by having children with Laney. Wish I could explain more how exactly I felt about the ending, but I did not care for it.

In this collection, Rachel Joyce connects seven short stories that span from just before Christmas Eve through New Year's Eve. What is most interesting is that Joyce not only arranges these tales chronologically, she also links them with other elements. You can read my review of this book (that I'm giving 4.5 stars out of 5) here. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2017/04/15/the-eves-of-winter-stories/

2.5 stars.

I couldn't get into this story, I don't know if it had anything to do with me giving my previous read, another mm romance book, 5 stars but I failed to gel with the story.

Don't get me wrong it had some nice moments and I loved that it was set in England, though I've never been there, but I didn't feel it.

This wasn't for me.

DNF @ PAGE 45.

I read the first one a while ago and wasn't that impressed by it but decided to keep the 2nd and 3rd books to read at a later date and after starting it about a week ago, I've only made it to page 45 and have no desire to pick it up and carry on, so I'm giving in.

It's not my sort of story.

Ok family adventure
I thought I'd give this a go after seeing a trailer. It's based on Dora the explorer cartoon series but giving a live action make over with a teen cast. For a family film it's ok, quite funny in places. It's a bit like a child friendly jumanji and Lara Croft combined. Definitely one for the young kids to enjoy.
