Leanne Crabtree (480 KP) rated The Princess in Books
Jan 11, 2021
I started reading it almost straight away and at the start I got caught up in it. But after a while I lost interest in the storyline because of how slowly it was all playing out. A quarter of the way in (out of 306 pages) and she was just marrying him.
I have this thing where, unless I'm really into the story that I don't like long books. I'm almost not a fan of a lot of description (I know most readers ask for it, but not me. I tend to skip over whole paragraphs if it doesn't interest me).
That's not to say it was bad, the book has four 5 star reviews on Goodreads. It just isn't really my sort of book. If I'm going to read something intrigue-y, I want something to be happening all the time. If I'm reading a romance, I want to fall in love along with them and I didn't.
After giving it another try about ten minutes ago, and still not getting into the story I'm finally giving in at 27% and DNF'ing.

Psyche is the human Princess whose looks have stunned her cities inhabitants into following her around and giving her gifts all her life. She can do no wrong in their eyes. But in giving the gifts to Psyche and not to the Gods, they've angered them and Psyche must be sacrificed by her family to marry a winged monster. But not all is as it seems.
I was really drawn into this story so easily. I was intrigued by the person Psyche was forced into marrying and it was amazing how quickly I came to like him. Of course I figured out who her husband was pretty quickly and the scenes between them were rather intimate at times and not always sexual.
Both Cupid and Psyche are looking for someone to love them for them and not for their looks. It was great to see the journey they both went on and I even cried at one point because I was so invested in them.
If you like mythology or any of Wendy Higgins' other book then you should give this a try.

Merissa (13159 KP) rated The Blood King (Inferno Rising #2) in Books

Abigail Owen has managed to write a story that focuses on the main characters whilst also giving you updates on those you already know, plus giving new information on characters yet to share their story. This is, without any doubt, Skylar and Ladon's book and yet we're kept up to date with Kasia and move forward with Angelika and Meira - whose books I CANNOT WAIT FOR!!!
The settings and individual characters remain absolutely brilliant. I loved how this story wove together Sky and Ladon, highlighting how good they are for each other even though neither of them expected it. The story moves along at a fair pace and the overall story arc is just getting more interesting!
A fun, hot, and gripping book that I have no hesitation in recommending.

Merissa (13159 KP) rated Something Cryptid This Way Comes (Love in Maplewood #9) in Books
Jul 11, 2025
Bram and Trevor were best friends growing up, until Bram left Maplewood. They have remained long-distance friends and go on holiday together once a year. The only trouble is Trevor thinks a whole lot more of Bram than just Best Friends. And Bram is afraid to rock the boat and lose the friendship. Along comes some Maplewood Matchmakers!
This is a nice story with good pacing and low angst. Trevor and Bram don't wait for the closing act to get their thoughts in gear, giving some nice scenes where they realise who they are to each other. Most of the intimate scenes between them are, well, not fade-to-black exactly, more like fade-to-grey. And when trouble does occur, it is easily sorted with little drama.
And that, I'm afraid, is why I'm giving it 3 stars. It was nice. It didn't thrill me, it didn't sweep me away, and I didn't feel that connected with the main characters. It was just... nice.

Rose (201 KP) rated Get Out (2017) in Movies
Jan 3, 2018
I had heard quite a bit of hype regarding this movie and it was well-deserving of it.
Many scenes were eerie without having to try, whether through camera placing/lingering or through catching something off to the side that you weren't quite sure you saw. Especially those oddly silent or dialogue-less scenes that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
I definitely recommend if you want to watch something that's a little bit different from what you expect and with a Stepford Wives edge.
