Knowingly absurd black comedy thriller is powered along by engaging performances and some good gags. A group of affluent friends think they're participating in a kind of murder mystery role-playing game; in fact the situation is in deadly earnest.

The script goes into overdrive to sustain this fairly preposterous premise for 100 minutes - it just about manages it but the first half inevitably feels a bit less forced than the conclusion. Still very funny indeed in places; there's a bit of tonal uncertainty - the thriller element is quite dark, with some graphic violence - but not enough to make the film uncomfortable to watch. Bateman and McAdams are particularly good, but lots of good turns here, both comic and straight. I laughed a lot, which is pretty unusual when it comes to me and modern comedies.

On paper Lynne Ramsay's art-house thriller looks like it's channelling Taxi Driver plus any Luc Besson thriller you care to mention: brutal mercenary (Phoenix) takes on a mission to free a senator's daughter, but the job goes bad, to say the least.

However, it's not just the story, but how you tell it - the plot itself is cut down to the bone, and the film is built around the way the director presents a succession of tiny details, a broodingly intense performance from Phoenix, and a driving score from Jonny Greenwood. Pretty heavy stuff throughout, with some graphic violence and a relentlessly bleak vision of the world, but not the kind of film you can really look away from once it has you in its grasp. Not sure it really qualifies as entertainment, but an impressive work of art.

The business card scene is the best!
Christian Bale is excellent as Patrick Bateman (Batman lol), a Wall Street executive with an extremely dark side, he is a cold-blooded murderer.

Much of the film sees Bateman juggling his two separate lives, and how has has to have everything just so, and loses it if everything doesn''t go his way. He really loves 80s music and explains the nuances of his favorite artists in way too much detail.

The ending is ambiguous, but that is all right here as it leaves you wondering what actually happened and what was in his mind and was he really just going crazy or dreaming.

Some very graphic scenes are not for the squeamish and I'll never like the song "Hip to be Square" the same way again.

Awkward and a little corny to start with but the story unfolds nicely once it gets going. (0 more)
Much better than expected.
I saw this film as a recommendation from a family member and for the first fifteen mins I wondered if I would regret it. It was a little awkward and corny to start with and the stereotyping did grate a little. However once the film progressed the humour worked well with the story line and I started to enjoy it. The characters each lent the film different qualities and it was a completely different spin on the story compared to the original film.
I wouldnt recommend for some younger viewers due to some innuendo and kinda sexualised scenes (nothing graphic but references are there).
Overall a good, casual movie.

This is not just entertainment this is a savvy social statement. Not only that but it's got a hidden meaning of one person you don't discover until the last page. That person will remain with me forever because I know there are hundreds of her out there today. I want to do something to help her and I wish there was something in the back that tells me how I can. Despite all that I imagine this being shown in ITV as one of their gripping well plotted crime dramas. It's just absolute perfection in plot and character and deserves to be remembered as a masterpiece. Now I am going to Google charities and fund out what I can do.

This is definitely not a read for people who have a delicate stomach or are repulsed by graphic and descriptive reads.

I myself loved the fact that this book really turned my stomach and the horrific story line blew away all rational thinking. This author found the darkest recesses of his mind and invited us in for an exclusive look.

My only con with Frank Made Lunch is that it is in need of editing but even that didn't stop me from giving it the rating that I felt it deserved.

This is the BEST horror book I've read this year and trust me...... you WANT to read this. I HIGHLY recommend you read this book and would love this made into a movie. I'll end this review by saying that Frank will remain inside my mind for many years to come.
