If it ain't broke, don't fix it
The issue with remakes is that it tries too hard to connect itself to the original while putting its own stamp as something new. This is no different.
Here we see a young woman becoming possessed with a demon said to be the same as the one before. But it has spread and gathered followers across Chicago. The priests involved include Father Tomas, flawed by temptations and questioning his faith, and Father Marcus, a known exorcist, who feels guilty about the death of one of his charges. So it's a similar setup as before, but their backstories are explored in detail unlike the first film.
The whole possession culminates up to a bigger conspiracy - a plot to kill the Pope visiting the city. There is a twist in between which reveals the connection between the film and the series.
While it's an easy watch, and the make up on the woman while possessed is pretty graphic, it finishes quite quickly all in the last episode. The build up takes a while, you have to get to the third episode for it to start getting interesting. And to be honest some of the episodes in between were quite boring and tried too hard to be dramatic. The most important part of the film was the subtletly of the story and the series is the opposite. Overall, watchable but not if you keep comparing it to the film which was a masterpiece.

In many ways Rhiannon is just like you or me. She lives a fairly ordinary life working a job at a local newspaper she doesn't really enjoy with people she can't stand (most of the time), hanging out with her friends who she calls PICSO's (people I can't shake off). She lived with her boyfriend Craig (who is having an affair with one of Rhiannon colleagues) and her little chihuahua Tink.
Except for the most part Rhiannon has lived anything but a normal life... A childhood trauma that she survived turned her into a local and national celebrity over night and she is a murderer... And she wants to kill again and again.
The book follows Rhiannon through a few months of her life in a diary format. In this diary she spills her darkest secrets and every day life, moans about her boyfriend, her neighbour, her friends and her colleagues.
Not for the faint hearted as the book can get very graphic and there is a lot of sexual content but this is all balanced out by the humour contained within. If you like crime novels, girly books or thriller I would recommend checking this out. It has earned its place in my permanent collection.

Informative but no depth
When audible originals offered this book up as part of their two free originals a month program, I just had to snag it. One of the weird quirks I have is that I hate mysteries, but I LOVE true crime. This 2 hour and 45-minute novella was right up my alley. When I was looking for something short to listen to, I decided that this something different than the romance books that I'm currently reading.
The information in this novella was interesting and well researched but still lacked depth. Most of the information that was presented in this book felt glossed over. One of the things I thought Bryan Burrough was exceptional at was not being too graphic about the crimes. Unfortunately, it seems that that lack of detail was present throughout the entire book. I would have loved to see more information about the background of the individuals and the town itself.
Something else that felt off in this audiobook was the narration. Steve White is an excellent narrator, but I don't feel that he was the right choice for this book. His intonations seemed to be too upbeat for a true crime novel about rape and murder. I would have preferred a more somber tone & his voice did not do this book justice.
All in all, this was an okay book. The details were interesting, but I wish that there would have been more depth to it.

I can understand why some other readers gave this such a low rating, but I enjoyed the book. It was slower paced than other books I have read but I finished it rather quickly. Each passage serves some purpose, whether its building the world, progressing the story, or familiarizing the reader with the characters. The characters had more self-loathing than I have read in any book but it was understandable considering what they have been through. I dont think some of the reviewers actually understand how the human mind works. With what these people have had to deal with in their life, they are actually well adapted.
There is also a lot of sex in this book. More than I expected there to be. And half of it is interspecies. I appreciate that the author had the decency not to describe one of them but I could have done without the other. I agree there definitely should be a warning about those scenes. Nowhere is there a warning that there are graphic scenes of any kind.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I loved the mythology. The plot wasnt overly complicated but it kept me interested even through the slow parts. But mainly, I was so invested in the characters having their happy endings that I couldnt put the book down. However, I can definitely tell why its not for everyone.

did not like Liv!
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
I have *issues* with this book.
Aside from the fact its single person point of view and blah blah blah of course I wanted to hear from Warin, Olivia has to be the single most annoying main character I have ever come across and I cannot,for the life of me figure out why I kept reading!!
She whines and moans and has the mental age of a teenager, I wasn't actually sure how old she was supposed to be til she and Warin are talking about how old he is.
Clearly, the British vampire Night Lord who's name escapes me already, is playing on a much bigger playground than just Chicago. And Warin's brother, Aleric, is part of that playground judging by the epilogue, but I can't see what game he is playing.
The book is reasonably well written, with some sexy scenes and some violence, but nothing too explicit or graphic. I saw no spelling or editing errors.
Will I read book two? Depends on who has the majority voice in that one. If it's Aleric? Possibly.
I just did not like Olivia!
But I did finish it, so for that reason...
