Fairy tale enthusiasts will love this young adult novel by Colorado based author Janna Jennings. Full with lots of magical references A Grimm Legacy is about four teenagers who get dragged out of their world and into the enchanted realm of Elorium. The mysterious Mr. Jackson, who they find in a mansion with a couple of elf servants, tells them that they have been brought there for a reason; but before anyone gets the chance to explain what that reason is, the four run away only to encounter many dangerous characters.

As the title suggests A Grimm Legacy is loosely based upon the stories collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. To get the most out of this book the reader needs to have an understanding of a variety of fairy-tales, for instance Cinderella. As well as the more commonly known, there are less recognized stories, which are of great significance to the novel: for example Jorindel and Jorinda and The Fisherman and his Wife.

Whilst Jennings has done well in her research into the different fairytales, she includes Jack and the Beanstalk as one of the references, which is in fact not a Brothers’ Grimm tale. Jack and the Beanstalk is an English tale that was first recorded by Benjamin Tabart in 1807. Either Jennings failed to realize this or she was including all fairytales within this book, in which case the title is misleading.

The book on the whole was quick to read and was full of exciting twists. I enjoyed discovering the various references to the well-known stories. One thing that made the text confusing, however, was the lack of breaks between certain paragraphs. Within a chapter there were occasionally more than one scene or setting and without a gap to distinguish between them it was often difficult to understand the changes in time period etc.

This book was written with young adults in mind but can be enjoyed by older readers too. It is not suitable for younger children however, not only due to the sinister nature of the original fairytales, but A Grimm Legacy has the occasional violent scene in it.

Despite the inaccuracy regarding Jack and the Beanstalk, this is a fun book to read. My only advice is to read it after you have explored some of the Brothers’ Grimm collection.

A cop with a secret
I loved this show which has just ended after 7 series. If you missed it make sure you catch it. Loosely based on Grimm fairy tales. A cop discovers his special ability that reveals the truth about some of the people in his town. A good mix of action mystery and horror.

Sabrina and Daphne Grimm are chasing a villain through the Book of Everafter hoping to stop him from realizing his master plan. The beginning was repetitive, but the second half really grabbed my interest and set things up nicely for the final book in the series.

Janna Jennings’ latest book, A Grimm Curse, is set long before the previous two novellas in A Grimm Tales series. Rather than focusing on Andi, a girl from the “real” world, this is a story about the characters in the fairytales – most importantly Cynthia or, whom readers may know her better as, Cinderella.

As in the traditional tale, Cynthia works as a slave for her horrible stepmother and stepsisters – a fate she succumbed to after the death of her father. There is also an upcoming ball at the palace for the prince who is seeking a bride. This, however, is where the similarities end. As well as Cinderella, other fairytales make their appearance, particularly The Frog Prince and Rapunzel. But something is unsettling the characters; they are experiencing bad dreams. Or are they memories?

Cynthia is a much more admirable character than the original Cinderella. She is clever, determined and independent – she does not need a fairy godmother for a start! Neither has she any interest in the prince. If she is going to escape from servitude it will be by her own dexterity, rather than her reliance on someone else to save her.

A Grimm Curse can work as a prequel to the first in the series as it sets the scene that Andi will come across. It can also survive as a stand alone as there is no reference to the events of the other books, however knowledge of these will help the ending make more sense.

Personally I preferred A Grimm Curse to the stories that Jennings’ previously wrote. I had misgivings about the author’s use of fairytales that were not one of those collected by the Brothers Grimm. The tales in this book were, however, so therefore fit better with the title.

I strongly recommend this story to readers – adult and adolescent – who are still in love with fairytales or retellings. It is as though it is written with feminism in mind as the heroine does not need a man to rescue her, thus is in keeping with modern times rather than the time period of the originals.
