Zuky the BookBum (15 KP) rated The Student in Books

Wow, well this really wasnt what I was expecting. I thought this was going to be a little mysterious but it wasnt in the slightest. It was just hardcore, gritty Australian crime.
This one is seriously dark and graphic. Im not really into the gritty sex, gritty crime kind of books, so a lot of this one wasnt really my cup of tea. We follow around a student drug dealer whose friend, and supplier, has gone missing. What ensues is a long journey of some seriously gruesome discoveries. While, of course, this book has a plot, its one of those books that also feels like it has no plot. It concludes itself, but it doesnt really finish.
I enjoyed the way it was written. The snappy sentences and the minimal descriptions, it felt right for this book. It definitely wasnt the best written book in the world, but it did what it needed to do and it did it quite well.
As for characters, theres no one to like in this book and I think thats intentional. I mean, dont me wrong, I did empathise with Nate in some parts but he wasnt a likeable guy.
In the end, this one just kind of depressed me and was reminiscent of Sarah by JT LeRoy in its brutal darkness. I think maybe the synopsis needs to be changed because it definitely sounds like a completely different novel to the one I just finished.

Great cast (1 more)
Raw and gritty action
Brilliant cop drama
A great buddy cop drama that has a real dramatic level of realism. It's largely the story of a pair of cops on duty in a tough part of L.A as seen through their bodycams, squad car dashboard and other cctv footage. The acting is spot on and the finale will have you on the edge of your seat. One of the best of it's genre I've seen in years!

One of the weaker Bond films
A very good action film continuing right on from Casino Royale. Plenty of action, chases and explosions. Has a certain Bourne Trilogy feel to a lot of the stunts and fights. The Bond films now are more gritty, raw without the tongue in cheek humour of the past films. One for all out action entertainment but not the best story for a Bond film.

This is the second book in this series by this author. This story is full of angst, action, drama and hot steamy scenes. fantastic characters, you will fall in love with as you read. I was hooked from the first page. This is a gritty romance read you will be reading long into the night. I can't wait to read more from this author in the future.

Not quite the sugar coated feel good film I was expecting. It's quite dramatic and gritty in places but I think that makes the harshness of the situations the characters find themselves in and what they go though in their life time more realistic. This makes the film better overall. Very well directed, a great story some great child actors and a fine soundtrack produce a film everyone will enjoy and be drawn into! Jai ho!!!

Intense
This Indonesian action movie on Netflix is a non-stop martial arts bloodfest. The acting was decent enough and the cinematography was done really well. The premise is simple - a raid on a drug lord's tenement building goes south fast, leaving most of the team dead and the rest simply trying to survive. If you're into gritty action flicks with plenty of gory fight scenes, this one is definitely worth a watch. (Unless you don't like subtitles).

An entertaining and quick read
I'm not much into cozy mysteries as I prefer hard and gritty mysteries, but this book charmed me. The characters drew me in pretty quickly and the writing style didn't annoy me or make me want to toss it on my DNF pile. I was able to relate to the older characters as I live in a nursing home and their quirks and personalities made me wish we had a murder club here!
