Emotional impactful
Emotionally insightful storytelling
This Netflix original was bound to be a hit with audiences from the get-go.
Starring the charismatic wonder Kevin Hart, the story follows a new dad struggling to come to the terms with the loss of his wife shortly after giving birth.
It goes on to show the importance of a decision, losing a loved one when there most needed, the struggles of parenting when feeling alone and most importantly-the importance of being a parent and guardian to a young one.
It is a sad but beautiful story, emotionally gritty, one about a depressed father struggling with acceptance and fatherhood.

These are the mean, violent streets of Glasgow in 1932. It’s a time when police officers like DI Jimmy Dreghorn and his man-mountain ex-Olympic wrestlerDS Archie McDaid get the results that are needed in the way that is necessary.
Corruption is rife, as is poverty and unemployment (it’s the Depression). Everyone is out for themselves - and that includes the police.
This is a hard, gritty read, not for the faint hearted, but compelling nonetheless. I was gripped from start to finish, and I’ve spotted that there’s more to come from Dreghorn and McDaid in a second book - it’s on my wish list already!

Gritty, dark atmospheric and suspenseful
This is another book that has been on my "to be read" list since 2015 and I have finally got round to reading it and so pleased I did as I really enjoyed it. Although this is book 4 in the Frank Behr series, I haven't read any of the others and I admit that it would probably be better to read the others in order to get some clarity and background to Frank but having said that, it didn't detract from my enjoyment of this book so will say it works well as a standalone.
This is a pretty disturbing story written from Frank's perspective and that of the killer; this I think was genius in that it gave Frank a strong voice and made him come alive but it also did the same for the killer which was chilling and oddly satisfying but perfect for this book.
The writing style was excellent and easy to read; the suspense and action scenes were described perfectly and all the characters were well developed and authentic.
This is a gritty, dark, atmospheric and suspenseful read that I found gripping and very difficult to put down; I will certainly read more of this series and from this author but hopefully won't delay it so long next time.

Not an original concept, but enjoyable watch
To be fair, I had never heard of the Hunger Games series before the film came out. So when I watched it my first reaction was - this is a rip off Battle Royale! Obviously that changed after the other films came out. However, I enjoyed the concept - because I loved BR. And I especially liked Jennifer Lawrence who always plays such fabulously gritty characters such as in The Winter's Bone. It's not a film you can watch repeatedly though because it is rather dark, and there are zero comedy elements in this dystopian fantasy (obviously). That being said, great acting all round.

Brutal
A very good film...in the end and a bit odd as well. The first 20mins I found very slow and dull. I was worried this could be a low budget shocker that was over hyped. Once the film got going though it is pretty relentless until the end. The violence is very brutal, gritty and disturbing. For once in a film it was quite realistic. The only down side was the twist towards the end which left many questions unanswered. Maybe a film that needs to be watched more than once to get a better understanding of it. Overall a good British thriller that will last long in the memory after viewing.

Nothing against Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets and other Scorsese masterpieces; however, this has to be his greatest work of all time.
Robert De Niro completely transforms himself into Jake La Motta both physically, mentally and emotionally. Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty are also magnificent in support of the story of a courageous boxer and his fall from grace.
Film students still study the directing, cinematography and the stunning visuals of the film in glorious black and white.
The screenplay by Paul Schrader and Mardik Martin is completely believable and make you empathize with this rough, gritty character in his world when he is up on top and on his way down.
A masterpiece!
