A decent thriller
When you put acting royalty like Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen in the same film, you expect big things. And this film almost lives up to expectations.

Mirren and McKellen themselves are the best thing about this film by far. Seeing them on screen together is wonderful, even if their acting styles often differ (and on occasion get a bit hammy). But they really are brilliant to watch and they lead this film well. Seeing Ian McKellen play a rather nasty and not very nice character is unusual and you can see he relishes this role (in some cases maybe a little too much). I do wish there had been a little more of Russell Tovey though.

The story itself is what lets this film down. The backstories of the characters are maybe not quite what you'd expect, but the way the story plays out and ends is a little bit predictable. And maybe a tad ridiculous. But that said, I did still enjoy watching this and it's a fairly decent and entertaining thriller, even with the slightly OTT ending.

A very basic premise, anna is down on her luck but gets recruited into the KGB as an assassin. She completes various missions but the CIA are on to her and eventually catch her out. They make her work for them and so on and so on until she is eventually given her freedom.

This is the first decent Luc Besson film in years (he will never ever beat Leon).Sasha Luss impresses as anna, helen mirren is also good.I wasnt to impressed with the way the story switches backwards and forwards in time.

The restaurant fight scene was pretty impressive and very bloody.

Dull and predictable
I’m surprised that someone as talented as Helen Mirren would stoop to being in this, it’s really well below her abilities. As a scary/horror film, Winchester is sadly nothing new. It’s entirely predictable, pretty boring and the scares are not very scary at all. I can’t really say anything good about it, as even the cast had very little to work with. It reminded me a little of the 13 Ghosts film, but even that was a hell of a lot better than this. I’m intrigued to know more about the actual events that the film is based on, but there are so many better horror films out there, I really wouldn’t bother with this one.

Head-bangingly silly action movie, but knowingly so; Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham squabble, drive very quickly and crossly, and crack heads all over the world while trying to stop Idris Elba from getting his hands on an apocalyptic McGuffin. Tip-top action choreography and a knowing sense of its own ridiculousness keep proceedings very engaging.

The subtext and character bits are perhaps a bit too perfunctory for the film to really fly, and there's a laborious comic relief turn from Kevin Hart which feels rather crow-barred in, but this ticks all the action and buddy movie boxes in lavish style. Features a cameo from Helen Mirren and Idris Elba being head-butted in slow motion, so surely there's something for everyone here.

Ensconced in her sprawling California mansion, eccentric firearm heiress Sarah Winchester believes she is haunted by the souls of people killed by the Winchester repeating rifle.

I find this house really interesting, it's on my list of things to do on a road trip of America. It's bizarre, and I love bizarre. Throw in Helen Mirren and I was going to be all over this film.

I did discover one thing from going to see this though... I really can't watch horror films in the cinema. I generally don't find them to be very good films, but that being said I do easily jump at things even if I know they're coming.

I love the idea behind it, and I thought the story was a good way of doing it, but the end result felt a little lacking to me. It does get some kudos for not being as predictable as some horror movies though.

An interesting but slightly dull morality tale
The politics and morals behind this film are what keep you watching, as the plot is so relevant to today’s current political climate. You don’t doubt for a second that this is how issues like this play out, especially if you’re like me and know how horrendous government and public sector politics are. The problem is that all the to-ing and fro-ing of the politics doesn’t exactly make for an exciting film. It tries to build a little tension, but for me this doesn’t come across as well as it could and parts of the film ended up a little dull. 2 hours is a long time for politics like this.

There are some great performances in this from Helen Mirren and Aaron Paul, and of course it’s great to see the late Alan Rickman in his last ever film. Sadly he isn’t in this film as much as I’d like, it could’ve done with a lot more Rickman! Overall it isn’t a bad film and is worth watching for it’s very relevant storyline, but it isn’t exactly thrilling.
