JBrack (17 KP) rated The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in Books

This is a great book but one you have to pay attention to or you will get lost!! While the story takes twists and turns you grow to care for the heroes of this book. You root for answers and reread pages to ensure you understand what the author is pointing out. It makes you work to figure out who did what and why, who is a good guy and who's only looking out for number one. So worth the read. However I don't recommend it for younger readers as the the content deals with very adult subject matter.

A nice message but gets lost in confusion
The best part of this read was the author's afterword explaining how she wanted to highlight the stigma of mental health. Unfortunately it's hard to decipher that clearly in the book with a few wishy washy themes of religion and racism, and a heavy focus on gossipping neighbours.
The 10-year-old protagonist and her friend Tilly are heroes attempting to sleuth their way into finding the missing Mrs Creasey and as much as I wanted the entire book to be from their perspective, we were lost in the haze of irritating adults. A nice idea but not quite there.

Crushing and disappointing
DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU LOVE TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.
That being said, the reason why Harper Lee completely falls short in this novel is the fact that she destroys the heroic images of the characters that we have grown to love.
Without saying more, once again this novel is written in the perspective of Scout who is now a young woman and much more independent and vocal about the civil rights movement. She learns that everything she loved and respected is actually very different to what she imagined, pulling down heroes from their pedestals.
I'm totally scarred reading this.

Exciting ... but too much hype before resulted in disappointment
Contains spoilers, click to show
I love all of these movies, some more than others, but I love the interplay between them and I don't mind leaving some of the movies with more questions than answers. But I don't like leaving the movie feeling down. Obviously things will change for the gang in a future movie and we aren't going to end the series with all of those heroes turned to dust. I wouldn't even have minded an ending with impending doom ... but one filled with loss and no teaser of something better was really disappointing.

Clash on...
I have been playing Clash for 5 years and I have watched it evolve.
It is similar to a lot of other strategy type games this is just a little more established than the others.
The most recent update introduced season challenges which gives the player a series of rewards on the completion of challenges.
You can however buy a gold pass which opens up additional rewards and discounts to upgrades and "skins" for their heroes.
The shelf life for this game is longer than most though the frequent in app purchases and offers can be frustrating

I had never heard about this true crime cases till I come upon Ann Marie Ackermann most excellent book. The story begins in the German town of Bonnigheim in the year 1835 where the town is left shocked by the assassination of its most respected citizen it's mayor. The reader follows the twists and turns of the muder investigation as a killer is searched for.
Eventually the investigation leads to the other side of the world and to one of Americans most respected Civil War heroes General Robert E Lee. The author has produced an excellent well researched study of the case and I would highly recommend this to other readers .

MissCagey (2652 KP) rated The 15:17 To Paris (2018) in Movies

This film started by showing the boys growing up, their mischief in school, their personalities forming and the relationships with their families. Not having heard of the incident or the people involved, because of their naughtiness at school I did wonder whether one of the main characters was going to turn out to be the terrorist at first!
I thought it was great that the heroes played themselves in this film. It gave it more realism- they were the ones who were there after all! How hard it must have been for them to relive what happened, especially Spencer Stone who was the out and out hero.
I was engrossed throughout.

A good action movie, no stupid unrealistic car chasing's and unrelatable cold and empty heroes.
Noomi Rapace as always gave an outstanding performance that definitely lifts the movie a lot.
I liked the fact that the leading character is not the normal detached strong man who has no feelings and can’t wait to get the job over but this isn’t the case. Noomi is not necessary stronger than the bad guys, but she is quicker, more skillful and smarter.
Easy watching film, that has smart action that doesn't let you get bored, but not too much action to get tired of it.
Would recommend watching

Phil Leader (619 KP) rated Altitude Rush in Books
Nov 8, 2019
This is a short story available for free download from Matthew Reilly's website. It follows the usual Reilly formula of breathless, suspension of disbelief action, compressed into short form. Engineering a situation where our heroes must get across New York against the clock and without going below a certain altitude, Reilly uses every trick he can think of to get the reader's adrenaline pumping as they leap from rooftop to rooftop. And he knows a lot of tricks.
This is certainly not going to win any serious literary awards but that's not what this is for. For pure escapist fun to while away the time this fits the bill perfectly.

I read this book to my sons when they were of an age to appreciate it. We all enjoyed it, especially as we all made a weekly pilgrimage to the local library on a Saturday to swap our read books for fresh reads.
Colfer takes a classic tale of the plucky heroes pitted against an evil villain (in this case the titular librarian) and had a great deal of fun with it. It is an easy read, funny and engaging and enough jokes aimed at younger children and adults for it not to be a chore for parents to read. And of course a great introduction to the author.
