Adam McKay recommended Hustlers (2019) in Movies (curated)

Hustlers (2019)
Hustlers (2019)
2019 | Drama

"For years and years in American cinema, thick-handed, pock-marked gangsters have planned and schemed in smoky strip joints with out-of-focus dancers shaking their hips behind them. The most these exhausted, hard-working strippers could hope for might be a B camera topless shot where they wink at a James Gandofini or Robert De Niro. But then Lorene Scafaria stepped in, grabbed the camera and rack focused onto these hitherto silent background characters, and with the movie “Hustlers,” changed the way we look at crime and American culture by telling their story. Scafaria has been known for her razor-sharp comedies for years, but with “Hustlers” she fully jumps into the world of Martin Scorsese or David Chase and makes their gangsters seem like they’ve had it easy. And she does it most impressively of all without framing her characters as victims. Destiny, Ramona, Annabelle and all of her characters are powerful and have wants and desires that drive them to break the law. Full stop. These women may have been born without the opportunities of the bankers they dance for, or may have children to feed, but they are at the end of the day fully conscious, fully aware criminals. And this movie is their story. Scafaria dares us to not view them as anti-heroes or heroes or villains but instead as complex contradictory characters. A few filmmakers have tried to tell the story of the 2007-08 financial collapse (myself included), but Lorene Scafaria took a page from the legendary columnist Jimmy Breslin, who rather than cover JFK’s funeral back in 1963, interviewed his gravedigger. It was an affecting and surprising piece that made Breslin’s reputation. And like Breslin, by choosing the characters we’ve traditionally overlooked, Lorene Scafaria gets to a side of our collective story that for years has been relegated to the background and makes it real and affecting without apology or judgement."

I LOVE this book.
I absolutely loved this book. I read an uncorrected proof copy, so there were a few errors, but I am sure those will be fixed before actual publication. But the book was AMAZING. Lois Lane is and always has been one of my greatest heroes. And this book definitely did the teenage Lois justice. In fact, she is pretty perfect. I also love how the author incorporates Clark Kent into the story in such a way that he is important to the story, but he is still secondary to Lane's character. A lot of times, trying to write a story told from the point of view of another character from a story as popular as the Superman mythos, the central character being written about loses her voice in favor of the more well-known hero. Not the case in this novel. I loved it. It was perfect. I hope DESPERATELY that the author continues to write more Lois Lane books in this fashion.

I scoffed at the author's note before the novel started. Of COURSE the characters and events are fictional. DUH. But i had to remind myself of that when i finished because Hazel and Augustus are my dear friends and my heroes. (and it's not because the "fought" cancer "bravely") Even as fictional characters -still don't actually, literally believe that- they left their scars upon me and I'm better for it. That's the whole point of literature, isn't it? That's the whole point of life: notice the universe but don't forget about the simple beauties in front of you. Like a fantastic novel.

SPOILER

I felt like Green put me in the shoes of Hazel in that he created a character that i fell in love with but tragically lost. In an infinite number of dimensions with an infinite number of outcomes, Augustus and Hazel live a long and happy life together. I refuse to believe anything less.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a hilarious romp of a superhero movie. Chris Pratt and friends return as the titular Guardians a few months or so removed from the first film. This time Star-Lord and friends must figure out the mystery of Ego The living planet and Star-Lord's origins. Writer/Director James Gunn strikes gold once again in this highly anticipated sequel. The way he has portrayed this ragtag team has set them apart from other heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. My only issues would be the retread of the whole "we are family" story. Vol. 1 already established that they became tight-knit through their trials on Xandar. The other would of course the weak villian of the film with the whole take over the universe plot point. Other than that it is a solid film.

Lindsay (1774 KP) rated Three Days to Forever (Mac Faraday Mystery, #9) in Books

Feb 15, 2018 (Updated Apr 9, 2019)
The author has you guessing from beginning to end. It's action packed along with a mystery through out. Laura Carr gives you what you look for in a mystery along with a little romance.

What up with all the Navy and military doing though out the book? Mac and Archie had been dealt with getting ready for their wedding. They're a family secret and what could that be?

Somehow Mac Faraday and David and Cameron are targeted along with Archie mother. There's a killer on the loose and they want something Mac Faraday has.

The terrorists wants to claim on a few members. They attempt to kidnap a woman. There seems to have a mishap at every turn. Will Murphy and the navy be heroes? This is a book is worth reading and getting the other books in the series would be worth buying. If you enjoy mystery or crime and detective books. This may be your cup of tea.
