Hardly even a movie at all, but who cares? It's a total blast. Toned with reliably cool + seductive shots from Lyne, God-tier choreography, and a rich 80s soundtrack that positively fucks hard. Jennifer Beals is a force of nature and studio Hollywood did her so dirty by not giving her many other worthwhile roles after this. Have a couple gripes, mainly the way it suggests that certain forms of exotic dancing are dead-end last resorts which are inherently demeaning - and the women seem to be the only ones who really get punished here as opposed to the creepy, trashy men (not to mention that dumbass eating joke with the receptionist). But on the flipside, it's nice to see a movie where women are celebrated for their genuine talent but also aren't squarely defined by it. That final audition dance scene is just about perfect. Good vibes. It's easy to see why its brief mention was one of the only good qualities of boredom all-timer ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜”๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜บ.

"For Charlie Chaplin to have the kid be this thing that kind of gives him purpose and some kind of integrity, I think that was great. Itโ€™s a very emotional and melodramatic subject and only someone like Charlie Chaplin was able to make it whimsical and funny, but also so heartfelt and sincere. So Iโ€™ve always loved The Kid. Absolute genius. I feel like he wouldnโ€™t have gotten there if not for his vaudeville years. Every now and then I like to read up on his life as a teenager before he got to Hollywood, and the fact that he came from nothing. He came into an empire with talent. He had nothing and he had nothing to lose, therefore he gave it all. I was watching Benny and Joon last week and what Johnny Depp was doing reminded me of the essence of Chaplin: he was so light but you understood that deep down in inside of him there was this really profound and emotional man. I feel like Charlie did that with a lot of his characters."

"Jules Dassinโ€™s gangster film about a robbery and its consequences is a French classic, noir before the word was in use to describe a certain kind of filmmaking. A word is in order here: I was educated in Switzerland, in an era when French-speaking people expected to see French films, so when we were allowed to go to the local cinema at Rolle or Gstaad, we mostly saw French films. British films, except for The Third Man, which is very โ€œEuropeanโ€ in tone, seldom played; still less big Hollywood ones. Rififi was a stunner, and an eye-opener, teaching us that French gangsters were a lot more interesting and attractive than our own mobsters, but just as tough, if not tougher. โ€œJulieโ€ Dassin was an American who moved to France, but he captured a whole, pungent slice of French life, and for months everyone at my school (le Rosey) went around trying to sound like Jean Servais, and to talk with a cigarette glued to their lips. Whole scenes from it still play in my fantasies."

Based on the memoir Molly's Game: From Hollywood's Elite to Wall Street's Billionaire Boys Club, My High-Stakes Adventure in the World of Underground Poker by Molly Bloom. The film follows Bloom, who becomes the target of an FBI investigation of her underground poker empire for Hollywood celebrities, athletes, business tycoons, and the Russian mob.

I guess I can take this off the list of films to see next year now thanks to this Secret Screening. It wasn't the film I thought they were going to put on, and a much later night than planned thanks to Cineworld listing it as an hour and a half long.

I enjoyed it, and it was a good watch, but I'd find it very difficult to rave about this one. Mainly it caught my interest because I love poker. The story flows well when it switches between the present and the past, and the narration worked well for me too. I'm not sure I'd have felt like I got my monies worth on a full priced ticket, but still an interesting film.
