Love detective books with some humor in them? Then sneak a peek at the historical mystery novel BAYOU CITY BURNING by D. B. Borton on my blog! https://alltheupsandowns.blogspot.com/2020/03/book-blitz-bayou-city-burning-harry.html

**BOOK SYNOPSIS**
Houston, 1961: comedy meets mystery and history. It's hard to be hard-boiled when your biggest fan and worst critic is your twelve-year-old daughter, especially when she's cracking your case for you and defending you from the bad guys, along with sidekicks human and feline.

Houston is still a cowboy backwater, but Texas politicians dream big. P.I. Harry Lark is out to save the city for President Kennedy's moon mission. Dizzy Lark is out to save Harry.

"This book sat next to my bed the entire first year I taught at the University of Houston. Hooks’ idea of “education as the practice of freedom” shaped who I am today. Whenever difficult conversations about race, class, or gender begin to surface, I remember what she taught me: If your students are comfortable, you’re not doing your job."

"My dear friend Joan Juliet Buck has had quite a life — epic adventures in Hollywood, Paris, London, NYC and Ireland! This is her life story about the drive and allure of glamour and appearances, all the way to being the first and only American editor-in-chief of French Vogue, to her complicated relationship with her father (who was producing partners with John Houston and Peter O'Toole)."

"Gregory Nava’s film was shown at a Friday school assembly at the private Quaker school I attended from kindergarten to twelfth grade. It was International Day or some special Friday event, and we had the whole morning blocked off. I remember being floored by the rough-hewn portrayal of migrants who were my age, crawling through sewer tunnels as if they were in a Victor Hugo novel. In my twenties, I would go on to chronicle the journeys of Latin American and Caribbean migrants who crossed into the United States without documents. I would ride in the backs of trucks with them, interview them at U.S. Border Patrol processing stations, track their families, who had paid coyotes thousands of dollars. As a thirtysomething mother living in Houston, our Guatemalan babysitter borrowed $1,800 because her son was being held in a safe house in Northern Mexico. After his release, he was picked up by Border Patrol and held at a processing center in Houston. An editorial friend of mine from the Houston Chronicle visited him there and wrote about his journey. He was eventually released and was reunited with his mother. The impact of this movie cannot be understated. I was lucky enough to meet Gregory when I was a Los Angeles Times reporter covering the lack of diversity in Hollywood, and I remain a fan of his work."

Good for commutes
I love this podcast so much. I drive from Dallas to Houston all the time, and this podcast makes the time fly!
Just to sum it up, Nic is trying to discover Tanis...whether Tanis is a state of being, a place, person, or thing, is relatively unsure. While trying to discover Tanis, Nic is faced with many problems as he tries to unfold the mystery. Give it a listen, it is insanely interesting.

I loved this book! Of course there was a ton of science but Weir explained in a way that made is easy to understand. The story itself is intriguing and interesting all the way through. I enjoyed Watney’s positive and sarcastic perspective but also really loved the chapters back in Houston or California, especially before they were all in contact. There were also a couple of chapters written from an unknown POV- it kept me on edge just waiting for Mark to find out and experience what was going to happen! Get comfortable with this one because it’s definitely hard to put down!

"Houston, we have a problem"

Astronaut Jim Lovell's famous understatement, here presented by Tom Hanks, in a film that documents (I was going to say dramatises, but let's face it: it's already dramatic enough) the trials and tribulations of the Astronauts of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission, and of the members of Houston's mission control who worked around the clock to get them home safely again following the explosion that crippled their ship.

Yes, we may all know how it ends, but this is still a very good movie with stellar performances by all involved!
